I did take note of the pad size and toe size's

main pad was about 5 inches wide
biggest toe was a little over 1 /2 inch
I have seen bigger out here but this one was extra special cause I was about 2 miles from any road even logging roads and alone this time .


after seeing this track I remembered to put 1 in the chamber

im sure that has happened. but usually its a good idea to be noisy around bears

those magnesium firestarters are fine. you just have to remove the coating on them. take some sandpaper and put it in your kit. id actually add a couple in varying grits. and you did fine using the bic. it is the best way to start a fire but always good to try using any other method yuo have. like with a waterbottle or mag lens.

This is the first "big" thread that I have read through in it's entirety in a while. It was such a relief to not see it derailed by petty bickering. Lots of well intended advice included.

Have you considered a solar charger for your phone? A good e-book and a few good apps can be really handy sometimes and will save you some weight if you can keep the phone charged.

nomorerack has li-ion batt packs that are 2600mah that work a treat in two packs for 18bucks. they have dropped their price eve more then a week or so ago. http://www.nomorerack.com/daily_deals/view/492915?n=2017&pid=1&pc=72482

anyway these really do work. will charge an iphone up 1 time. charged my camera up 2 times. i bought 2 of them 1 from big lots for 15 bucks and 1 from office depot for 9 bucks on clearance. anyway this along with a solar charger would work a treat. you can also find battery packs that will use 18650 li-ion batteries some with 2 and some with 4 that has a usb port for charging. it will charge off 1 through 4 cells. depending on the cell used will depend on capacity. hkj does some great testing on this site and his own http://budgetlightforum.com/forum/batteries/chargers

solar is nice and i do have a solar charger and it takes about 8 hours to charge a charge back like at nomorerack. with two you can leave one at camp charging and take one with you as a run extender or charger when you get low.

Food, toothpaste, pots and pans, anything that smells like food is always hung from a tree branch high off the ground. Tie a rock onto a long rope and throw it over a high up tree branch at least 10' from the trunk, and before bed pull up the pack of food and tie it off to the tree. You get better at throwing the rope and finding the right tree after a couple of times. :

slingshots work a treat for this as well.
