I don't normally like to sound alarmist but has anyone else been paying attention the California drought? They say it’s the worst on record.
Last week the Interior Department announced they will not be giving any water to farmers in California’s central valley. I don’t know how much of our food is grown in the Central Valley but California provides roughly 50% of the fruits and vegetables this country eats. It’s probably around 10-15 percent of all the calories we consume.
I was talking to my wife about it last night and she said prices in our grocery store will be going up. I know this is not the beginning of the end but it’s going to get harder to make ends meet this year.

What Komifornia fails to produce in fruits and veggies will be trucked/shipped in from other countries to make up the difference. It could cost more per item but it will likely be there to meet any demand the market is likely to see.

Now for some potential good news (depending on your views of course), lack of growing = lack of selling, which means less taxes that can be gained for the communist state to use.

Maybe now Komifornia politicians will stop listening to the vocal minority of tree huggers, spotted owl members and the likes and worry about people in their state and possibly the economy within their state to which they have control over.

I know its a lot to ask (in some peoples mind) that human beings be put in front of the spotted owl and tree's

The larger farming operations are feeling the stress more than the small farmer here.
It will reach the smaller scale grower, eventually affecting most all farming efforts this year.
My small lake looks the way it normally does around late August... but it's barely the tail end of Feb.

Grow your own now. Learn what you have been missing, after you taste real veggies and fruits you will not want to eat the tasteless food they sell now. Heck even tomato's from WW2 had over 55% more nutrients then they do now. They grow them for speed and ease of harvest not for flavor.
+1. I just see events like this as a reminder that the nationwide food system that most people depend on is fundamentally fragile. Not to mention kind of goofy.

Wasn't their record levels of snow this year? That will melt in a few weeks and fill up the rivers and reservoirs.
Upper Colorado River basin (along with Yampa/White/Green) snow pack is about 120% above long term average, and well below 2011/maximum snow pack. Although it is an improvement over last year's snow pack, it will not even get close to making up for the current drought.

Yup, I got started in gardening a couple of years ago. The quality of my harvest is amazing! Can't stand store tomatoes anymore. Just today I doubled my garden area to increase production this year.

My brocolli and califlower are almost ready for eating!

Good thing I'm expanding my gardening to include fruits this year. :)
Some fruits take years to start producing. Years ago I grafted some Jonathan apples onto rootstock. After the grafts took I planted them in the orchard. That was 7 years ago. They have been producing for two years now.
