9% unemployment statistical LIE

Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the latest unemployment figures last Friday. There was a stunning drop to 9% from 9.4%. How did that happen? Is the economy really getting better or is the government up to its old statistical tricks. According to the mainstream media, the economy is getting better and the so-called recovery is alive and well. Here’s how the Associated Press reported the story, “The unemployment rate is suddenly sinking at the fastest pace in a half-century, falling to 9 percent from 9.8 percent in just two months — the most encouraging sign for the job market since the recession ended. More than half a million people found work in January. A government survey found weak hiring by big companies. But more people appear to be working for themselves or finding jobs at small businesses.” (Click here for the complete AP story.)

“More than half a million people found work in January.” How? The BLS reported there was only a tiny gain of 36,000 workers to the payrolls, and even that number is a statistical lie, according to economist John Williams of Shadowstats.com. In his latest report (last Friday), Williams said, “Incredibly, despite ongoing regular overstatement of payrolls by the BLS, the BLS appears to have upped, not lowered, the excessive biases in its latest rendition. Without the higher bias, the reported January 2011 payroll gain of 36,000 would have been a decline of 52,000.”

As for the big drop in the unemployment number down to 9%, you can credit that with something the BLS calls “seasonal adjustments.” The government takes into consideration things like cold weather and snow when it puts together unemployment figures. Williams thinks these seasonal adjustments have been distorted by the dismal economy during the past few years. Williams says, “. . . the extraordinary severity and duration of the economic duress in the United States during the last three to four years has destabilized traditional seasonal-factor adjustments and the related monthly reporting of certain economic series. The unemployment rate rose in January 2011, not seasonally adjusted. The 0.4% decline reported in the headline January unemployment rate appears to be a seasonal-factor issue.” In other words, seasonal adjustment jobs are created out of thin air and are not really there for people. In reality, unemployment increased slightly. It did not decrease.

While we are on the subject of reality, after one year, the unemployed are no longer counted in government statistics. If unemployment was computed the way BLS did it prior to 1994, the true unemployment rate (according to Shadowstats.com) would be 22.2%. I wonder why the mainstream media feels compelled to only do stories that support government statistics. There is bona fide analysis that can show government numbers are rigged to make things look better than reality.

Yesterday, millions of Americans celebrated the unofficial holiday called the Super Bowl. In closing, I would like to share part of a comment I received recently from a regular reader named Samantha. She writes, “We are living in Roman circus-like times! Keep the people entertained and they don’t have to THINK too much and certainly don’t have to notice the corrupt activities of our elected officials. The “Stupor Bowl” is an intentional dumbing down of our society.” Things are a lot worse than the government would like the public to know.

Problem is the unemployment rate isn't even based on any statistics. It has absolutely nothing to do with those getting laid off, those collecting UI or those that gave up looking for work, let alone those underemployed.

It's based solely on 50,000 phone calls made each month to people all over the country, called the Current Population Survey. For my state it only calls 3 people a month, hardly a good representative sample when our states population is close to 1 million.

These statistics seem much more plausible to me (18 -25%). No one that I know does not have at least a couple of unemployed relatives and numerous friends.

This also does not take into account the tremendous number of people seeking full time employment who are part time employed and/or underemployed.

Reality check: All of the SOCIALIST high tax/fee, high regulation, incentives to move jobs off shore has wrecked our economy and caused massive unemployment.

We need to create tremendous incentive to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US, incentives for employers to grow their companies and expand labor forces and invest....

It's not going to happen under this "regime."

I believe that the job situation is way worse than they're letting on. In my area, (Buffalo, NY) you aren't getting a job that pays more than $8.00 an hour. And they'll only let you work 16-28 hours a week so they don't have to give you benefits. And they'll give you such a crazy schedule (different days, hours each week) that working a second job will be a near impossibility. I went on a job interview and there were 30+ people in the room competing for a "good" job that paid nearly $12 per hour, no benefits provided only 18 hours a week. There were some women trying for this clerk typist job that had master's degrees. It's really sad. Businesses are just closing suddenly and all the workers show up to find a note on the door, "sorry, closed indefinitely."

In addition to a climate that is inhospitable to man and beast, the leftist politicians who run Buffalo have never met a tax or fee that they didn't like... Same is true in Niagara Falls.

It's a fascinating study to see how Niagara Falls, Ontario - right across the bridge - is a thriving metropolis of business and tourism, while the American side is nothing but slums and ghettos.... oh, and the Indian Casinos, that "really" turned the economy there around like the politicians promised the sheeple...

and all this, despite some of the most amazing natural beauty in that part of the country.

Liberal, leftist policies can destroy anything!

The way unemployment was figured during the Depression was done very differently than today.
The calculations done during the Depressions were halted in 1965 by the government as to not show such as high figure.
The highest figure during the Depression was near 27%. This calculated umemployed and part-time workers, not working full time.

I feel the hurt as well, I think its even harder at my age. Let me just give you an example a few years ago I applied to be a lifeguard at a local waterpark of course they hired us(they need over 250 of us) and about 230 applied. Next year over 600 people applied, and not just 16-20 age group that we normally get, this time we got 30's 40's +. Not saying that its a bad thing but its quite obvious that things are really going downhill. Of course a lot of people couldnt get a job. Since thats a seasonal job I havent had any luck in the past YEAR trying to get one. Seems like people with BA degrees get them over me, how the hell can I compete with that at age 20?!
I live in Sacramento, and I have applied, literally to over 200 places

Its a fools errand to compare a country of 30 Million to a country of 300 Million....

The economic and societal ratios are not the same... so the causal relationships will not be either...

...food for thought...

Most of the employed I know as friends have had to settle for jobs paying $9.30 to $7.50 per hour.
I am refering to 14 friends of mine. A very close couple to me have owned their own business for 12 years. They own the property that their business sits on.
This last weekend they called me to see if I may be available to help them move their equipment to their residence.

The last 4 months the business has dropped off so much they can not meet their expenses. They have decided to lease out the building and try the business from there garage.

Myself, I have been unemployed for nearly 6 months and have had 11 interviews and have 62 resumes into various companies. Age seems to have become an issue in the last few interviews.
I have never been unemployed in my work history, and I have learned to eliminate unneeded expenditures.
I am not above flipping burgers for a living, but I have not even gained employment in those places either. It is tough out there, never would have dream to the depth of difficulty.

I do believe that the government is reporting many fictitious numbers and many companies have many prospects to be very selective in their hiring practices.
Many people out here underemployed and out of work...

This is funny i clicked on this link at the very moment HLN morning express reported about this 9% They wanted to clarify how this number came to be apparently they been getting alot of people asking the same question.
They say this is the number of new claims for unemployment. Which would mean that 9% are still getting fired. Ok 9% of the job force out there? or what? they say it is a sign of the economy returning that less people are losing jobs. But this could be because companies are so cut back that if they fire anymore they might as well close.

If you divide the number of employed persons by the number of persons age 18 to 60 eligible for employment less the number of disabled you get about 71% employment, or 29% unemployment. I have little doubt that the true unemployment number is in excess of 25% and when you consider that many of those employed are underemployed, the rate of unemployment and underemployment might actually be over 1/3 of the country.

Americans are being told all kinds of lies about the recession. This isn't a world recession, it is an American recession.

Totally agree... except I'd call it a Depression...

Age seems to have become an issue in the last few interviews.

..really..at 51.?I guess I'm lucky being retired...I had no idea it was that bad out there.I guess employers know they can push the younger workers harder.

A very sad state of affairs for the unemployed..hang in there it's gotta get better.I say that because I have lived thru downturns my self..back in '82 when I was at the end of my unemployment benefits & I still had house payments.Things changed & within 6 month I was working OT.

Here's the straight talk from the next President.
