Just curious, for your ak47 or variant rifle to protect your home, family, or land how much ammo do you keep set aside (excluding recreation ammo). Meaning only ammo you would touch if you needed to. Also, what brand?

I stock up for two reason. To have it during rough times and it is never going to be any cheaper than it is today.

At bare minimum 500 rounds. I highly suggest something other than wolf or FMJ stuff. Something hunting grade. Sellier and Bellot 123gr brass cased soft points or hornady v-max plastic tipped bullets. Both provide great expansion. Make sure your rifle and each of your magazines feed these bullets well, especially the soft point stuff.

I have a good bit of the cheap FMJ stuff stocked, but I keep the stuff that produces better wound profiles too.

I keep several kinds around. I have quite a few SKSes that may be used as handouts if the situation called for it. For those, I keep several cases of Wolf FMJ. I have 2 loaded 200 round bandoliers for each SKS.

For my own AKs I have a combination of Wolf FMJ and handloaded softpoints.

Keep in mind, it's not what you got it's how you use it. Don't skimp out on practice to stockup on ammo. IF you don't practice, you may not need any ammo at all.

Most of us here have way more than the bare minimum needed. It is more of a comfort item. right next to the stocked shelf with the chocolate bars.

Pick up when you can. The deals on ammo are great. I am sure shops are hurting. Summer time many folks don't think about rifles and folks already spent a ton and stocked up well the past year or two.

wolf ammo has gone down :) $225 a case.

id like a case each of FMJ and HP's for the ' dont touch untill D day'
The Wolf HPs don't expand. They act like FMJ except that the sharp edges on the tip can catch in some guns causing feed failures. Since they're not going to expand anyway, might as well just go with the FMJ for feeding reliability.

The current batch of Wolf's Military Classis HPs will generally tumble and fragment, so those might be worth buying instead.

I have wolf and golden tiger in 7.62x39, Usually I shoot up and replace the wolf ammo. The only reason I go through wolf ammo is that it's wolf is easier to come by. I'm getting ready to test some MFS 7.62x39 I bought last weekend and see if I like it. If so I'll probably stock up on some of it as well.

I think I have about 1000rnds of 7.62x39 FMJ and maybe 500 of the 150gr HPs that I use for hunting/home protection. All Wolf.

i tested some of my 122 gr hp's by shooting them at 50 and 100 yards into water jugs and cans of dirt, they did expand in a sense, they did open up, they 'fragmented'. breaking into several pieces with the jacket and core separating.

My idea is to have some mags loaded with fmj for penetration, and some with hps for expansion.

and mabey a mixed mag.

My wasr10 does not like the hp stuff but chews through almost any fmj...wolf, brownbear, golden tiger, ect. Same with my hungarian variant. Thinking about getting a few of the 500 round spam cans for storage.

and good point on needing to know how to shoot for it to be useful, I have plenty of range time in, try to get to the range at least once a month. even at that I would rather not run out of ammo when the SHTF

Other rifles with more expensive ammo like my 30-30 for example at 15 bucks a box not easy having 1000 plus rounds sitting around but I found buying a box here and there once a month or so adds up.

What type of rifles do you guys have that are shooting HP rounds? I tried that wolf military classic and the stuff jamed both my romanian and hungarian.

The best alternative is the Hornady v-max plastic tipped. They are pretty much jamb free and have great terminal ballistics. Those bullets have worked well in my 7.62x39 handloads too.

They don't do it in flesh though. And even a FMJ will break up in dirt, so dirt is never a reliable test medium. But if your gun shoots the HP reliably, there's certainly no harm in using it. Just be realistic with your expectations.

mine is a ruger ranch rifle, iv not had any hangups with HPs, very accurate with all the cheap wolf.

I thought jugs of water wore the way to test to compare to flesh.
