I am going camping soon in the mountains where there are bear. I am going to bring my .44 mag with 4"bbl. My question is what type of ammo to use in case I have an encounter. I currently shoot the 240gr JSP, but I thought I read somewhere that the 240gr soft point will not provide adequate penetration and stopping power in a bear.

Check on the Federal Fusion hollow points. There 240grn they will stop a bear.

Thats a good bullet for sure but I would personally prefer something a little heavier and hard cast if its anything other than a typical Black Bear. On a potentially bigger bear I would want all the penetration I can get and the ability to smash through large bones and stay intact. But thats just me...

250 to 300 grain hard cast lead semi-wad-cutter at 1400 fps will pretty much take down anything you will run across, two or four legged.
