My first attempt at linking a youtube video, I hope it works. Oh well, normally when we think of 308 we think of long distance as that is what it was designed for. Recently I picked up an 8.5 inch barreled ptr91 pistol as I already am stocked on ammo and mags for my other ptr91. I figured if nothing else it will be more portable.

So, internet searching the concept of sbr 308s I came upon first... a lot of, "your just wasting powder, get a 7.62x39" comments. Cool, except I don't want stock another caliber/magazine. Then comments on Hornady Tap being good for this purpose. I then found the former video of Winchester pdx in ballistic gel and figured it would at least be worth running a magazine or two. If I continue down this path the plan is to sbr and suppressor.

So just to recap the negatives, it will loud! There will be unburned powder lowering the velocity. And it will probably kick a good amount.

Does anyone have any positive experience or guidance on doing the 308 in pistol or sbr form?

For your stated purpose (CQB), I think you'd be very shocked at how hard it is to effectively employ a 7.62 NATO chambered pistol.

That's a special purpose critter best employed as a car gun or a concealment weapon.

Besides the problems you are already aware of, managing recoil and effective repeat shots will suffer greatly. I've done building clearing with a full sized G-3. They work. But I think you'd find the pistol version disappointing in actual practice.

There's a reason that military and law enforcement units don't use rifle caliber pistols for CQB. Not in 5.56. Not in 7.62 x 39. And certainly not in 7.62 x 51. Just not the right tool for the job.

Like PGO shotguns and Derringers, folks can't resist them. But not very practical in reality.

SBR and suppressed is definitely the way to go.

Look into HK-51/PTR-51 conversions and X-Products 50-round drums.

Go for the HK style retractable stock and an integrally suppressed 8" - 10" barrel (HK-51SD)

Just my opinion.

The video shooter reminds me of a rather old rhyme:

"The smith, a brawny man is he,
With arms like rubber bands."

This guy has some SERIOUS musculature and awesome control. I'd never be able to fire something that powerful. [Memo to me: "Do not try this at home."]

if its suppressed it may be OK, i wouldn't recommend it over options like 300 blackout but since you are stacked and already have the pistol, sbr it and suppress it..SWR Specwar works great on .308 and Saker is looking like it will be phenomenal...

If not suppressed then i would DEFINITELY say no...too much flash, concussion, recoil/muzzle flip is just too many negatives.

CQB implies a high potential for being inside an enclosed structure while shooting. Anyone that has ever fired a 5.56 inside a building will tell you how not awesome it is to fire .308 indoors, especially with a short barrel.

I have a G3K with a 12" barrel and it's concussive out in the open. CQB would be a nightmare with it.

I can barely imagine how deaf you'd be plus how much permanent damage your ears would suffer. I have permanent hearing loss just firing next to a building and a vehicle with a .357 revolver and a .30 cal rifle.

Yes, you can suffer permanent hearing loss with one incident and there's nothing a doctor can do to fix it. :(

"Interesting concept, ever taken a look at the Kel Tech RFB?"

Never shot one or even seen one in real life, but it seems pretty badass. You could slap a red dot sight on there and use it close quarters."

Even if you shot at the perps foot,, the hot ejecting brass...out the front , would scare the $h/t out of most hemarroids.

The empties just fall out the front kind of randomly don't they?

friend of mine called me a couple deer seasons ago...all excited...he had a shot at a doe with his 308...round went straight through it and it dropped instantly but the round exited deer #1 and entered deer #2 standing behind it...both deers dead..one bullet...200yd shot..told me all I needed to know about the 308.
I can't imagine it for CQB..ie in-building, etc...great for dropping power at a distance or punching through cover...so in a squad it's nice to know one of the team is carrying a bigger stick...

but for one guy?... if you want capacity.. I'd look at the Vec in 45...nothing has ever impressed me like the old Thompson machine gun...the bullets hit hard, and stay in your target.
