This is a review of three different types of 22 bulk ammunition:

1. Remington Golden Bullet Brick of 550 rounds 22 long rifle hollow point
2. Federal Value Pack or 550 rounds 22 long rifle hollow point
3. Federal Champion brick of 500 rounds

22 long rifle test - Video 1

This first video covers the Remington and the Federal value pack

22 long rifle test - Video 2
This second video covers the Federal value pack and the Federal champion ammo.

22 long rifle test - Video 3
This is a side by side comparison for the Remington, Federal value pack and federal champion.

Overall, the Federal champion gave the best results followed by the remington and the federal value pack last. The Remington 22 golden bullet gave 2 malfunctions over the past 3 weeks. Neither box of The federal ammunition gave any malfunctions.

I like the fact that the Federal champion also comes in boxes of 50, as compared to the shells being loose.

now remmber results will very from weapon to weapon like all weapons, no two 10/22 will shoot the same. each indiviual weapon will like a certain type of ammo better. if i was to take those same boxes of ammo my 10/22 may shoot the rem better.it is a good idea for everyone to go out and do this same test with their weapons and see what ammo shoots best out of their weapon.but it is interesting about the misfires

kev what have you been feeding that boy he is growing like a weed cant believe how much he has grown

were the wieghts of the bullet the same? Its kinda hard to tell witch round is better in this test. You are comparing who is a better shooter more than, which round is better. I think to compare the different rounds you need to setup the rifle to were it stays locked on target and wont move and shoot. Then after you have shoot a lot (same number of each different round) take an average of what hit the bulls eye. That also may not be conclusive though sence you make your targets on the back of paper plates and the center may be off a little bit on each one. Then there is the factor of different weather and that almost makes it impossible to get a correct result. I am not trying to "bag" on your test or anything. It was a good test. I am still not sure which one i want to buy though.

I do not own a gun vice - because shooting from a gun vice is not real life. Nor will any of my test be done from a gun vice, why - because that is not real life. I do not know a single person that takes a table and vice with them when they go hunting.

Real life shooting is done from the shoulder, so all of my test will be done from the shoulder.

To take the "Human error" out of a test, is to make the test results unrealistic and unachievable in real life situations.

Kev- hey, I don't think he meant that as a personal attack... he was just pointing out that you have to have some consistancy when comparing ammo. Would it be acceptable for my seventy something Dad to shoot some rounds of one type and me to shoot some rounds of another only to find my grouping better and declare mine the better ammo? I know that's an extreme analogy but none the less... I mean you might have had one too many cupps of coffee on that particular day, or lack there of, or any number of things... there's far too many variables when you don't control the circumstances of the experiment. (okay, now you can go hating on me too) For the record, I'm not saying what you did was wrong, bad, or whatever.. and I appreciate you taking the time to do it... I'm just saying..

I really do not understand?

Korey shot his 30 rounds - 3 targets and 10 rounds on each target. All his groups were about the same.

I shot 30 rounds - 3 targets and 10 rounds on each target. Federal Champion gave by far the best results. The Federal champion gave a 2+ inch group, Remington golden bullet gave a 6+ inch group.

I guess I failed to get my point across in the video. 2 people focused more on kev VS Korey, instead of the results of each shooter with 3 different types of ammo.

------EDIT------

I got the idea for this type of a review from a gun magazine. The editors gave 3 or 4 people the same exact item to review. The authors reviewed the item, then the results where published side by side. Korey gave his results - all his groups were about the same. My results were a lot different.

This article is really 2 reviews in one - one by Korey and one by by me.

Am I missing something here? Or did yall not watch the videos? I bet yall did not even watch the videos.

guys you need to watch the video again. kev also shot useing all 3 types of ammo. useing paper plates is just fine what he is looking for is how tight of a shot grp he gets with each type of ammo, hitting the center was not even in consideration what he is doing is seeing which ammo his weapon likes best by seeing how close all the bullets hit he can adj the sights later to go with that ammo then he will work on hitting the bullseye. that is how you judge how accurate the ammo is for YOUR weapon. i personaly wouldnt use a truck as my base but it seemed to work ok. what range was you shooting at?

kev if you keep feed that boy corn he is going to out grow you (LoL) cant beat a corn fead country boy :)

*sigh* It has nothing to do with the paper plates... it's just that if you're going to compare ammo then the most scientific way to do it (and to be the most accurate) would be to fire from a fixed position. This eliminates the variable(s) caused by the shooter and gives a more accurate comparison of the ammo, it's not about you vs. him shooting, it's about the fact that all people can shoot the exact same ammo differently. If you fire from a gun vise and test the different brands you could erase the human factor from it. With all that being said, there's a good chance the results would be similar- I do believe that your technique gives a good idea, in fact, good enough that I have based my next 22 ammo purchase on it. I wish I could better explain what I'm trying to say- it wasn't meant to be a dog on your production at all.

* erase the human factor from it.
Erasing the human factor gives unrealistic and unachievable results in the real world.

I think is was S.James that said - train like you fight. I shoot like I hunt, from the shoulder, not from a vice.

We're not talking about the performance of you and your gun and your ammo in a street fight... I thought you were just comparing types of ammo in which case you're supposed to eliminate the human factor so as not to skew the results.

I agree, ammo testing for the sake of testing the AMMO, not the shooter, should be done from a rest etc...to make the results more accurate...

But on another note....why does no one mention thunderbolt ammo? I mean, they are just as popular, right? Thats all I have shot in my 10/22 and its fine. Just curious as to why its never talked about...

EDIT - on a side note, I did remeber kev saying his test was mainly for misfires and general groupings, so this was a good test overall I'd say...

federal 510 is good stuff. my 22s also group the best with it compared to the other bulk brands. it groups almost as well as premium stuff like eley and wolf match, making those not even worth buying at more 2-3 times the price of the 510.
i heard you can get it at walmart but mine doesnt carry it. i had to order a brick online for $20. where did you buy yours?

I got the federal champion at a local academy sports and outdoors. After the results I saw, the federal champion is going to be what I am stocking up on.

The next test will be federal champion compared to other types of more expensive ammo.

I think that was more the goal here than straight up which load is more accurate in an effort to split hairs. Excellent post Kev, thanks for the info! Its nice to see some real world gun/ammo testing since the real world is where we shoot our guns...not the test lab.

Thank you.

A lot of us read these gun magazines and we get the mind set that the "Gun magazines are always right" - that is a load of BS.

Just because I do my stuff different from a writer in guns and ammo magazine does not make my review wrong - it just makes it different. Locking your gun in a vice for every shot is not realistic. The members of this site need real world results with real world test.

I had another guy on youtube post a comment about the results. My reply was along the lines of "do your own test and post the results." The other guys reply was "its not that important." Translated - "I'am too lazy to do my own test."

Its one thing to dispute the results in text, its another thing to repeat the test and dispute my results with your own results.

So if any of the readers of this article dispute the results, do your own test and post your own results. Open sights from 30 yards, 2 shooters, 3 types of ammo - its not that hard to do.

Next weekend I might do some more test with the Federal Champion and some other type of ammo. It will be the same type of test - open sights, 30 yards, 10 rounds on each target.

you really cant disput some1 ammo test outside of misfires/dirty because each and every weapon will have their own results differnt from yours. so you really cant compare accept jamming or how clean the ammo is, that about it. accuracy is up to the individual weapon vise or no vise, you really cant compare ammo unless it is from the same weapon and it will be only for THAT weapon. my weapon will have totally differnt results so i CAN NOT use your test results to decided my ammo for my weapon. I have to do that myself because what jams in your weapon may not jam in mine and might just shoot best. that is just the way it is you cant get around it.

what this video did was show ppl who do not know how to campare ammo just how to do it and what to look for in results. truethfully thats about it, i cant get anything more out of any ammo comparison becuase it not my weapon.maybe a new idea of how to do it but nothing on the ammo its self, that is something we all must do.

Then I invite you to do your own test, and since you endorse using a gun vice, please do so.

After you do your test firing, lets compare your results to mine. I am interested to see results from other people and rifles with this same type of ammo.

The three brands, types and where I bought them from are listed in the first post.

One criteria I test ammo for is accuracy. We do all our tests from a fixed barrel at 100 yds. In the opinion of CCI/Speer, that's the only way to test.
