It's a 1988 Chevy R20 Suburban 7.2l 454 automatic, we bought it last year to use as our tow vehicle, it is currently a work in progress (mostly cosmetic junk,
I fortunately bought it from an old dude that took really good care of it. They only used it a few times a month to tow a horse trailer so the mileage is only about 100k.
Stuff I've done in the past year:
rebuilt tbi
k&n air filter
New headliner ( cause I'm still going to be pimpin it post apocalypse)
4000watt system (10" sub,NEW 4x10's, NEW 3.5's", 4 X 6.5's", 2 X 6x9's, CD deck
Hid back up (for hitching at night)
3- point belt conversion for the 2nd & 3rd row seats ( we have little ones)
New Battery
ALL New Hoses & belts
New All aluminum radiator with transmission cooler
New Fuel filter
Flowmaster ( will soon be two flowmaster 70's with an x pipe, currently getting about 12mpg while towing)
Chrome Exhaust tip
12'x 5'x10" custom fab baja roof Rack
10000lbs receiver hitch
There was very minor rust on the roof that I repaired and gave a bed liner murder paint job, After looking at it for a few days now I think I'm going to do the whole truck. It's hella easy to put on and looks wicked.

The New Roof rack.
I have a few heavy duty hinges and plan to make a fold out platform to set up a tent on top. this rack is really massive @ 12'x5'x10" (LWH). The fold out platform will be roughly the same area dimension as the current roof rack and will act as a lid for the cargo basket to hold in our gear. We plan on doing roll down sides and screening in the area under the fold out as well as setting up our 9'x14' family tent up top.
By our estimation we could sleep all 9 of the passengers we could haul in this huge freakin truck we have 3 rows of bench seats.

yeah that thing looks nice, we love our burb, it's a solid truck and can fit my 3 boys, 3 dogs and all of our gear really easily.
With the roof rack I'll have about $2600 into it total and dont have any complaints really.
We dont go off road too much so 2wheel is fine for us but when I do buy another here after the move It will definitely be a 350 4x4.

Can Do!

headliners are really easy to re- do,
all you need is some fabric and a can of 3m spray adhesive. you may need to replace the foam too- if it's loose or falling apart the fabric wont stick scrape it clean.
1) Spray down the headliner backing (mine was fiberglass and intact.)
2) lay out 1/8" foam (if needed) smoothing out towards the edges using your palm
3)Spray foam, let sit for about 1 minute.
4) lay out fabric of choice
5) trim foam and fabric with a razor

through my experience felt works the best and is easiest to work with for first timers, stay away from anything sheer and nylon gets "soak- through" pretty easily. Any Linen, felt or leather works great and only takes about 2 hours to do in an 88 suburban.
I plan to do our Honda Passport next week and will try and do a step by step on it if anybody is interested.

I've done an s10, blazer, El Camino, and a VW bug - all were really easy

I have a 1998 4x4 3/4 ton 6.5TD...paid $5,000 out the door, but had to rebuilt the engine 4 months later. since then I've done the IP and PMD and put on a Heath Diesel cold air intake along with regular filter changes and 33.5" tires (255/85r16). My truck gets 16-20 mpg with 4.10 gears.

It is a sweet truck...although it hasn't been the same since I changed the PMD...is there a performance PMD out there or something?

OP, the rig is cool, but what kind of fuel mileage are you expecting? Also, as far as bugging out goes you may have to go off road.

Hopefully I. Will get around 14mpg with an improved intake and second flowmaster. Currently getting about 12mpg which isn't too bad. It's not a daily driver. But I am definitely going to buy a diesel within the next year. I have been scoping out the prices up in washington and idaho and they are about the same so I will probably finish this one up and start a new project in the spring.

I plan on painting the whole car with bed liner we have another black vehicle and it's not too bad during the summer. Plus the burb is very well insulated (for the stereo) + front and rear ac's that really crank we plan on doing the details in grape purple.I'm not looking for something uber tactical just a fun weekend truck to pull the trailer with and going hunting

I Have a 93 sub 1500 4x4 350 auto and get 12-13 while towing and my 93 K2500 ext cab truck with 454 5 speed got 10-12 towing a goosneck horse trailer loaded at 16000 cross country so your powerstrock may have more power but the price of fuel is not worth the extra 2 mpg sometimes a little maintenance and upkeep make a big difference just saying.

Thanks for the reccomendation on the gears tro but I don't think I'm going to fool around too much more. It's mechanically sound and really just needs paint now. I will probably give it a 4" lift after the move. I like burbs a lot and plan to buy another once up north. I will most likely get an older one though
