Hello,

I am looking to add a 1911 to my collection and would like your opinions. I am looking for something affordable and most important dependable. My range is up to $900 but less would be better.

Your ideas would be appreciated.

I like my Springfield. I have the "Fully Loaded" version with the extended guide rod. I probably wouldn't do the extended rod if I were going to be cleaning it more often; it's a little more picky to strip and re-assemble. But it shoots well, cycles all the ammo I've given it so far. I use exclusively handloads, from 185gr hollow point to 250 grain cast lead, and haven't yet had a failure to feed.
As always, your mileage may vary. But I'm a happy camper.

I'd look at a Springfield on the mid to high end and a Rock Island on the low end.

I currently own a Colt, Kimber, and Rock Island.

Personally I'd stick with the full size 5" gun.
Mid size and compact 1911's just aren't as reliable as a full size gun.

you can get a really super nice 1911 for 900 bucks. "affordable" and "dependable" start around 4-500.
RIA Tactical, Taurus PT1911, Para GI, and others. The sigs, kimbers, and s&w around 7-800 are very nice also.

Buy A New Colt Made 1911 And Mod It Yourself

Easy and fun to learn up on one of the classic pistols. Now over 100 years old and going strong. Once you understand the platform, your failure/maintenance concerns will go away. Very user serviceable. Again...you kinda get what you pay for. HB of CJ (old coot)

I've got more than a few colt's. It's just what I prefer. I have the Combat Elite, which in my year range is out of your price range, but the new remakes of them are very nice and in your price range. Just the other week I picked up a combat commander for $700, and I now carry that more often than not. The new Combat elite is called the XSE series they are doing. And the colt 1991 series are a little cheaper as well.
But as the others said a springfield is a good choice as well. My father likes the crap out of his "loaded" springfield.
Haveing been in your shoes, living in the Peoples republic of Kalifornia, your going to have to expect to pay a bit more than everywhere else.

I have a Springfield Operator so I have pretty high standards for what is a quality 1911, but I've fired my friend's PT1911 and I was impressed. It even came with two 8 round magazines.

X2. Were it me, I'd find a good used Springer Mil-Spec, replace the MIM parts (hammer, sear, disconnector, slide stop) with quality forged/billet parts and put a set of tritium sights on. Good to go!

My first handgun was a Colt commander, i never looked back... three years and its still cycling PERFECT, (haven't had a single misfire.). i do tactical classes and all sorts of crazy stuff at work too. (i work at a shooting range)

I would go after a nice used Kimber. Yes, they are spendy new (spent $1400 on mine new), but I see them used in that price range regularly.

I own a couple of them and they are VERY reliable well made 1911's.

The other suggestions above are great as well, you certainly can't go wrong with Springfield, Colt, etc.

+1 on drobs post. Full size original John Browning design. 230 grain military ball ammo with practice. I have several with NO fail to chamber, fail to fire, fail to eject problems.

I've been looking at these Rock Island 1911's, and I think they are good value for the money.

For $900 you can almost buy two Rock Island tacticals... And I think you will find them every bit as good a 1911 as many of the more expensive 1911s from other manufacturers. There is nothing magic about a handgun. It's metal and/or wood and plastic... And after that it is craftsmanship. Just like the H&R Pardner is every bit the quality of the shotgun (if not better) than the Remington 870 it is copied from... Similarly the Rock Island 1911s are great guns... Not just "great guns for the price" ... They are great guns PERIOD. Many people equate spending more with getting better quality. Sometimes that is true. Other times it isn't. In the case of 1911s... You can get some excellent ones without having spend an arm and leg. This is not to knock 191s like the Springfield or Kimber... They are terrific handguns. But you won't be disappointed with RIA.

People need to keep in mind John Browning envisioned a handgun that would be mass produced in the millions. That makes for a handgun that shouldn't cost an arm and led... Not that I'd ever turn down a Colt Gold Cup.

....have fun with that cast frame on that ROCK ISLAND rather than the forged frame on the colt..just saying....
Colt's quality on their 1911's are about every bit better than that of RIA. not saying RIA doesn't make a good gun but if you're looking for durability, better fit (tolerances) and a better finish...Colt is the way to go. btw.... Colt only has four MIM parts and one nylon. i'm sure RIA has a lot more MIM parts.
