Currently I'm considering purchasing a Mossberg 600 12 gauge (used) for $185, and curious what everyone's thoughts are on the weapon, both for home defense and hunting. (and value for price)

Price sounds great to me depending on how "used" it is. if it's on the shelf and you have inpected it for broken parts and such, then jump on it. I agree with clemson to an extent, but if you have only one gun for home defence I would choose the shotgun. A pisol is easier to move around with , but the shotgun is like your own personal cannon.

Is this a double barrel?
No, pump action, (I consider single shots and double barrels nigh useless for home defense) used but in excellent condition from what the dealer's told me. We're going over on Monday to take a look at it and hopefully test fire a few rounds.

If it's in any thing close to what they are telling you then it's a good deal, IMHO.

the 12ga shotgun is the most versatile weapon you can get. you can hunt rabits, duck, bear, man and everything in between. it is just ammo dependent you must use the right ammo for what you are useing it for :thumb:

how long is the barrel? you want a 18" barrel for HD. 28" will make it combersome in the house. you can buy a brand new mossberg 500 at wally world for like $220. then a 18" barrel for $80.

I just got back from taking a look at it first hand, turns out it's seen some good use but is in very nice condition. (no rust anywhere on the rifle, the action is very smooth and has a nice wood stock)

Only down side is it has a 28" "deer slayer" barrel making it a touch cumbersome for home defense. Still worth the price tho, and I'll likely be putting the deer slayer to good use next fall when Megan takes me and Rosie out hunting.

Now all I need is a place to get a decent 18" barrel for a good price.

most places the short barrel will run you $100+. You might be able to get one for a good price on E-bay or other such sites. I'd look around a bit and see what you can find. I had one of those 28 inchers on my last gun, they are a bit cumbersome, but doable. I personally just ended up buying a new shotgun with the short barrel because it wouldn't cost that much more.

I likwe the price for your gun, but you would probably be better to buy one of those home defence packages like I did. $225-18.5 barrel-interchangable standard stock and pistol grip. You could probably get it for less, but I wasn't in the haggling mood.

I was searching around on the wb trying to find a good place for you to get a short barrel for a 600. I couldn't find a 600 barrel, the 500 barrel may fit.

The best price I saw was around $75 for a cyl. bore 18.5 inch barrel for a mossberg 500. Check and make sure that the 500 is a match for your 600 before you buy, because I can not find a barrel for the 600.

Thanks for looking Maverick88, I'll look into it and see.

I checked walmart for those package deals, and the cheapest 12 gauge pump they had was over $300. (Personally I prefer to buy a used gun in good condition over a new one as all the kinks have been worked out of it and it just feels "smoother" to me.)

SILVERESSA, the mossberg 600 is the same as the 500, bbls interchange fine, you can probably find a 500 18in on gunbroker.com used for about 50 bucks, they are fairly common, but have a gunsmith or armorer check it out before you shootit, as it was most likely a tradein gun, just to be safe

I heard the difference on a 600 from the 500 is only the firing pin so pretty much the 500 and 600 are totaly interchangeble.

If for some reason you cant locate one I have several that were squad car take offs, nothing wrong with then but maybe some cosmetic flaws, . I dont throw any gun parts away unless totally useless.

Hello COP790, I just recently traded for a Mossberg 600 also and was wondering what price you would ask for one of your used 18" barrels?

i just purchased a mossberg-88, turns out just in time, some jerk tried to break in my door. blew him right back out into my driveway with lead shot, honestly i thought i had loaded buckshot, guess he got lucky. High recommendations for 88.
