Wow. One more reason to really work towards a more healthy nation! The growing obesity epidemic among American schoolchildren isn´t just a grave health concern -- it´s also a national security issue, says a report by a group of retired military officers called Mission:Readiness.
More than one in four Americans age 17-24 are too overweight to join the military, and weight has become the number-one medical reason recruits are rejected, the group says. Mission:Readiness is pushing for healthier school lunches.
Currently all branches of the military meet or exceed their recruitment goals. However, recruitment isn´t the only problem, as tens of millions of dollars are spent yearly to train replacements for troops discharged because of obesity issues.
