Investigators say a ‘‘survivalist” with a stockpile of food and more than 30 weapons and 230 pounds of chemicals was ‘‘rolling along” in producing explosives in his Gaithersburg townhouse when he was arrested last week.

When authorities searched the man’s home, they also found his 12-year-old son sleeping with a loaded handgun under his pillow and another within reach, county police said.

An anonymous tip about illegal fireworks led federal and county investigators to James L. Boka, 47, of the 9100 block of Turtle Dove Lane in the Charlene neighborhood off Goshen Road, officials said. He was arrested May 21 and charged with 11 counts of possession of a destructive device, two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of weapon endangerment to a minor, according to a statement from county fire officials. He was released from custody the same day on $60,000 bond.

‘‘The amount of chemicals that he had in his house were a public safety hazard,” said Kenneth Korenblatt, battalion chief of Montgomery County’s Fire and Explosives Investigations unit. ‘‘...We were just glad we were able to stop this guy because he was already rolling along.”

Boka is not suspected of terrorism, Korenblatt said, describing him as a ‘‘survivalist.”

Boka could not be reached for comment. A woman answering the phone at his home Tuesday declined to comment. State property records indicate that Boka bought his townhouse in 1998.

A James Boka registered with an online Ron Paul county group described himself as a U.S. Navy veteran who has ‘‘worked inside Washington for 25 years in nearly every major agency, including World Bank, Pentagon.”

‘‘I have been aware of the plan to destroy the USA for many years now and I have grown tired of preaching the danger to so many people who do not want to hear it,” the profile continues. ‘‘...There is nothing more important to any American right now than to fight off the attempts of the New World Order and its puppet masters from destroying the last few pieces of the United States Constitution before it is too late. I want to help in any way I can so my son does not grow up in a fascist police state.”

Police are trying to determine whether the weapons found in Boka’s home – including handguns, rifles, machine guns, silencers, ballistic body armor and several thousand rounds of ammunition – were obtained legally, according to county police spokesman Lt. Paul Starks.

It is believed Boka, who was stockpiling food as well, legally bought the 46 kinds of chemicals online, Korenblatt said.

After receiving the anonymous complaint, an investigator conducting surveillance in the neighborhood observed a fireworks display around 9 p.m. on May 20, and then saw Boka walking out of a field toward his house with his son while carrying a mortar tube and a lighter, Starks said. The investigator questioned him and left after Boka turned over the items, he said.

The investigator returned to Boka’s home that night and saw him loading boxes of fireworks into his vehicle, Starks said. A loaded handgun was also in his possession, Korenblatt said.

The investigator again confronted Boka, who consented to a search of his home.

During the search, the investigator discovered Boka’s young son sleeping within reach of a loaded handgun and another under his pillow, Starks said.

Boka’s neighbors expressed shock about the arrest.

‘‘I was really surprised,” said Therese Provencher, 25, who moved next door to Boka with her husband about a month ago. ‘‘They’ve always been very pleasant, very nice, always willing to help us out,” she said.

An Amazon.com wish list registered to a Jim Boka from Gaithersburg includes books on homemade fireworks and rocket construction, disaster survival, UFOs, government conspiracies, military history and how to carry a concealed weapon. Other selections included a night-vision weapon sight and scope, a gun safe and an air rifle. The wish list begins with an item added in 2002 and mostly features products such as children’s books, DVDs and toys until late 2005.

‘‘All of a sudden he started to do this kind of stuff,” Korenblatt said.

Boka is currently unemployed, Korenblatt said. His computing services and Web design company, Pulsar Network Services, is no longer accepting new clients, according to its Web site.

Virginia-based couples counselor Chris Wright, a former client of Boka’s, was also surprised.

‘‘I can’t imagine,” he said. ‘‘Jim’s not that kind of guy.”

Those who met Boka when he volunteered with the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Agency, which assists with radio communications during emergencies, agreed.

‘‘He used to be one of the old stalwart members,” President Ben Acton said. Boka stopped attending meetings about a year ago, Acton said. ‘‘He just didn’t seem into it anymore,” he said.

Seems he's most likely a constitutionalist, who has been forced into survivalist mode because he's aware of what is coming down the road in the near future. Aside from letting his 12 year old have enough access to the handguns enabling him to sleep with one under his pillow, he seems to be doing nothing wrong. If they are so interested in protecting the neighborhood from chemicals, why are they putting chemicals in the neighborhood's tap water?? WHy are they dumbing down our kids? Why are they tazing us when we ask important questions to potential and past presidential candidates?

Is he a "terrorist" if he is stockpiling weapons or explosives to fight for the constitution? Depends who is labeling him a terrorist and how they view the constitution.. To guys like George Washington, the man would be no different than any patriot who fought under him in the revolutionary war.

I'd LOVE to live next door to this guy just from what I've read about him in the article..

I'm just freaked out that they quoted so much internet research. Shows what you can find on someone with a simple Google search. I am a bit bothered that they quoted that info without PROOF that it was the same James Boka, though it probably was. It isn't good journalism if you don't verify, but since when did that mean anything.

The only issue I see with what he had was the gun within reach of his son, and that's only because I don't know the kid. Some 12 year olds are mature enough to handle firearms, while some 32 year olds aren't, so it's not a huge deal to me.

What bugs me is them reporting the stockpiles of food and weapons like they are something in and of themselves.

So does half of America become terrorists on july 4th? Think of how many evil bastaids run around with "explosives".

Last year I had three evil "mortar tube's" to send up fireworks on the 4th, does that make me 3times the normal terrorist? Maybe it will move me up a step on the most wanted list.

They are using Boka. This is what will happen to you, if you store food away, for an emergency, or if you stockpile guns and amo, for your own protection.

Boka is made to look like a parnoid nut case. If you don't want the government involved in your daily life....then you better not do anything to prepare you and yours for the comming callapse.

But it is going to backfire. During stressful times, like we are experiencing throughout the world. People are going to do what they need to do, to survive. And that does involve preparing for emergencies with stored food, clothing, armaments and the will to use your instincts to survive.

And when the government holds up one of our own, and redicules our beliefs and ideals, infront of our own faces...Boy are they asking for trouble!

This just makes me mad as hell! I will be doubling up on my prep purchases in the future. I will be more creative on how I camaflage my stores. And more determind then ever to ready and able to defend my family and my home.

Constitutionalist, survivalist, either way, he's not a terrorist. Best thing to do is keep a low profile, and pay for everything CASH. Any preps I make are paid in cash, unless it's absolutely something I need/want and have to order online. Other than that, guns(face to face), ammo, food, etc. is always paid with cash. No paper trail, and they can't go back and say "oh so and so bought this, this, and that on his credit cards".

and THAT is why I get punchy when people start talking about converting firearms or making explosives/chemical stuff on this site. The way the media is, they'll insinuate someone is a neo nazi if a guy has a WW2 history book with a German soldier or anything nazi on it. if you have more than 2 inches of steel pipe youre in posession of 'bomb making equipment'.

I notice they never said whether or not he had a class 3 liscence for the 'machine gun'. That leads one to believe that all machine guns are illegal.

Now is not the time to make these things.
The can be very good defensive weapons and force multipliers, but use some since!
Armature explosives and devices are not the things safe for storage.
Cache them well and deep. You will not be able to get these chemicals freely for much longer.

I wonder if anyone will contact Korenblatt and congratulate him on NOT suspecting Boka of terrorism ...

... Or send anonymous thanks to the journalist who actually wrote a remarkably positive story given the circumstances.

We all expect journalists to have a field day writing up a story about a man who has enough chemicals in his home to cause injury and probably death to innocents living nearby. Even more so if his son has loaded pistols at his fingertips while he is sleeping, with the potential to cause himself or others harm.

Yet this journalist showed remarkable self restraint, and even finished the story off with not one but two positive quotes. (Quite the opposite to leaving a bad taste in the mouth!)

So from this journalist's article we know that his neighbor, his former client, and a man he volunteered with all think he's really nice. Plus the battalion chief of Montgomery County’s Fire and Explosives Investigations unit was quoted as saying he is 'not a terrorist' ...

... and we also earned that Boka described himself as

I want to help in any way I can so my son does not grow up in a fascist police state.”
... which casts him a relatively sympathetic light, and sets him up as a person with genuine concerns. (His employment history has not been confirmed or denied, and until it is, he could be viewed as having potential credibility.)

If it turns out he really is a former 'Washington Insider' passionately trying to protect "the last few pieces of the United States Constitution before it is too late", we might even see him interviewed on '60 Minutes'.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't think he could have asked for better media coverage. And he was pretty lucky with the investigator he encountered as well.

It remains to be seen how it turns out, but so far the negative emphasis seems to be on the kid having guns (not when he's awake and alert, but when he's asleep) and the danger of blowing himself (and others) up in a populated area. Fair enough. (If I was Boko Senior I'd be hoping Junior wasn't dreaming about a home invasion as I went to check on him at night.)

I'm not seeing any attack on survivalists anywhere in this story. Are you?
:)
PS. If you're a member of this forum Mr Boko, good luck - and let us know how it turns out! ;)
