A USGS TOPO map from 1953 and recent map are not aligning up. There is a spot in the local national forest that had something on it in 1953, but is not on current maps. I called a local blue print company and they printed out a USGS TOPO map from the USGS historical website.

I am trying to get topo maps to learn land navigation but am having trouble printing them from the USGS website. They seem to be scaled too small t actually use a protractor and compass with.
Anyone have any tips about doing it right?

I know many people love their GPS systems but I want to know what most of you like.
Last fall I used one and I wasn't totally sold. The thing kept loosing signal when we where in thick cedar swamps and other off trail places, maybe operator error but I don't know.

I am an Old Map and Compass Guy. lEarned it in the Army. What are the best resources for topographical maps? DeLorme is not detailed enough for me. Anyone has suggestions would be appreciated. Looking for Nevada, Utah, Arizona areas.
