I was looking at stocking up on food. The problem is, I'm hesitant to just buy stuff and store. I would prefer to buy stuff that I can throw in my normal rotation of food. However, I buy just normal cans of vegetables, beans, fruit, etc... If I buy the large cans from Sam's, it would be...

Lets say your going to go to the local feed and fertilizer store to buy some beans and peas, what kind would you buy? And how much would you buy? These peas / beans will be stored in your freezer. These are for your stockpile, and not for immediate use. Pinto beans - high in protein Purple...

Anyone stocking this? I taste tested some Hormel,,,,I THINK it was Hormel! Pretty good, very filling as a single meal. I can eat a LOT and I didn't finish the can. Suprising low in fat; not necessarily a good thing for survival or storage but,,,,,,, I paid c. $3.50 for a 12 oz. can. I am...

I see a lot chatter about tasty foods of all varieties, but what about basic "human food" that is healthy, provides necessary nutrition, affordable, and has a long shelf life.... even if you have to sacrifice taste. Think "Human Chow" instead of "Dog Chow". Anyone got some ideas for this? Thanks

I have a question about sugar. I bought a 50 lb bag, then seperated it into smaller food saver bags, and sealed the food saver bags without vacuum sealing it. I plan on putting these bags int a plastic storage tub. If I buy 10 lb bags of sugar, I leave them in the paper bag and put them into...

Okay...I have read until I am bleary eyed. Whats the deal with the whey protein? I want to keep it on the shelf for a food shortage supplement situation. I dont necessary care what it tastes like. Or the dangers of using it in body building. I want to know if it will sit on a shelf until I...

Disclaimer: I'm not a nutritionist or a doctor. I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn last night. I'm just a guy that likes numbers and likes a challenge. So, if you find this valuable, thank MikeK for , in the nicest way, telling me to go look it up myself :thumb: All weights below are dry...

Ok, many of you know i went through a harsh, personal SHTF 2 years ago, and lived off of my preps until they were gone. Today, I have a regular dehydrating program going as well as stocking up beans, pasta and various types of rice etc... Living alone now, I still buy as if I had a another...

Hi. I love rice (good thing) and its a real big part of me being able to feed us on the cheap. However, I was wondering if someone more knowledgeable than I, could speak to: The pros and cons of various kinds of rice. As it is I have several. I've heard brown rice does not keep as long. I...

I searched and didn't see a thread, so... Does anyone know what the difference would be in shelf life if you stored something like rice in large glass jars (with metal covers) with O2 absorbers, verses mylar bags in pails? The reason I ask is that I have access to 60-100 free 1 gallon, large...

How can I tell that the oxygen absorber I put in with my rice is doing it's job? When can I expect maximum oxygen removal? I know I won't get a "vacuum seal" look (air being nearly 80% nitrogen) to see that it's working. And I don't want to open a mylar bag 5 years from now and find that...
