My first time ever growing squash,
I know tomatoes can do it but first time i've ever seen 2 squash do it. Hadn't checked my squash in several days because of being sick but don't remember any close together a few days ago. Have had rain off and on almost 5 days in a row now and my squash...
This year I am thinking about making single mounds for each major plant. Beans and peas would still be planted in rows. However, stuff like squash, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant... I am thinking about tilling up a 24 inch across circle, then filling it with manure, ash, bonemeal... etc.
Walking to the back of the property to check on the garden, looked to the back, and several of my neighbors cows were there. My dogs saw the cows, and the fun began. A couple of my dogs are cur dogs, which seem to take great joy in herding cattle. Sometimes my dogs slip into my neighbors...
How did all the farmers and gardeners here do?
locally, middling year for corn farming; too much rain. picking soybeans in a few weeks.
gardeners did poorly with corn and tomatoes, not too bad with melons and squash.
How are things in your garden/farm/area?
When it comes to stockpiling seeds we have discussed the topic in depth. Something that has been overlooked is how many seeds should you stockpile?
I have come up with a simple formula and would like to know what yall think.
How many seeds do you normally plant to obtain X amount of harvest...
Last year I learned a clever organic trick to this common issue.
What you do, is spray a mix of water and milk on the leaves, on a sunny day. The mixture can vary, depending on how much protein is in the milk, but I used about 50-50 with 1% milk, and I had great success with that...
Who here has some recipes on canning squash and zucchini?
For fathers day I got a Presto 01370 8 quart pressure cooker. Then today my wife bought me a Presto 1745 16 quart pressure canner.
The squash and zucchini are still producing, which means I need to start canning.
How do you can your...
I came across this today and wondered if anyone has tried it. For those who find gardening space an issue, I think this could be very helpful!! :thumb:

Posting a question for my dad- he has 10 acres surrounded by woodland so deer are a big problem for him. He has a gated portion of his garden, but he'd like to expand the garden outside of it this year, and he was wondering what crops he could plant that the deer will not touch.
Here are the...
Winter Squash shelf life.
I don’t know how long winter squash can be expected to be stored after harvest, but here is a breakdown of what I did last night.
Harvest 8/11 dinner 3/25/12
I sharpie my winter squash with the date when I pick them. I store them on a slatted shelf I built that...
My wife and I are working on our first larger garden in 3 years. We previously lived in Belgium where we had a significant garden with lots of goodies. Living in Washington state, the region is very similar to what we had experienced in Belgium. Therefore, we're planting very similar foods to...
During a long term SHTF survival situation, its going to be important for people to grow their own food. One type of seed that survivalist should stockpile are seeds for squash and zucchini.
Cooking some squash, zucchini and boudin in a cast iron skillet
Ok, why you grow squash and zucchini...
I really want to grow a couple summer squashes and a couple winter squashes on my 1/3 of an acre urban lot but it looks like I wont be able to. Last year my most prolific veggie was my zucchini, so I decided to look into other squashes, summers for eating when harvested, and winters for...
well this is really part of the 2011 garden, but it was taken today. Towards the end of the last season I planted out a bunch of winter veg - I bought them as plugs which is not real frugal but it certainly was handy considering I don't have a lot of room here.
I had kale, and winter...
RE: Cucurbita [squash]
I learned a few things at the recent 'Seed Savers Exchange', and I wished to share one of them with you good gentlefolk.
Squash: within the genus of 'Cucurbita' there are four species of squash that are commonly used for food.
Gardening multiple varieties of a species...
Survivalist12's Survival Garden Of 2010.
We spent 5 weekends making this thing. The Wooden boxes are easily transportable and are a great resting bed for the plants and...
This garden was started on February 21, 2010 when the ground was tilled, fertilizer spread and seed potatoes planted. The fertilizer used was 10-20-10, which promotes large root formation with the middle number being 20.
On March 28th the other rows were tilled - snap beans, squash and...
I've looked through Carrots Love Tomatoes, and somehow I've missed this information.
I will be interplanting planting corn and pole beans, with the beans using the cornstalk as support (maybe with a few extra poles too).
The recommended corn spacing is 2.5' - 3'
The recommended bean spacing...
