Interesting article about how Whole Foods is testing the market for rabbit meat, and the protest that followed. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/08/are-rabbits-pets-or-meat/378757/ Seems people are confused that rabbits were food before they were pets. What I find disturbing...

My wife and I have a bag of deer corn for the feeder. While I was filling up the rabbit feeders, I thought why not add some corn to their feed. Wild rabbits eat the corn out of the feeders, so why not add some corn to my rabbits food bowl? I'll keep yall updated on how things go.

After building the rabbit hutch, my wife and I built a couple of hide-away boxes for the rabbits to get into. The box also acts as a birthing box, a place to get out of the cold winter wind, and a place to get off the wire of the cage. The problem is, the rabbits have been urinating in the...

Wondering a little bit about other people's experiences. It looks like a viable way to get some meat. What kinds of problems have people had? What were your startup costs? Your results? What do you wish you'd done differently when starting out?

A rabbit hideaway box serves several purposes – it provides a place for the rabbit to hide, provides the doe with a birthing box for her litter, and provides a high place for a lookout point. Rabbits are prey animals, and as such will want to hide when they are scared. The rabbit hutch was...

I have previously been using cattle to suppliment my dogs food. (Mastiff breeder here with lots of dogs) I am putting in a privacy fence and want my meat supply to be inside the enclosed 2 1/2 acres so I obviously do not have room for more than the milk cow and a calf in the lower pasture...

It's been a while since I've posted around here, but I wanted to share my latest acquisitions. Bought a trio from a local breeder and looking forward to when they're old enough to make some babies. I still need to build them a nice hutch, but to be honest it's ridiculously cold out. They don't...

Has anyone raised rabbits just for the manure? If so, what kind of rabbit breeds did you use? I thought about getting a few rabbits so rabbit manure could be added to the garden and compost bins. A lady I work with likes the Flemish Giant, she says they are friendly and crap a lot. I have an...

It has been a year and a half since my wife and I started our small backyard rabbit stud. It has had plenty of success and a few failures. We started with dutch rabbits, 2 does and a buck. Then added Lops, and then New Zealand Whites. We have had great luck with the dutch's, they are great...

I was looking up how much meat a female rabbit can produce in one year, and came across this list of facts. http://www.ardengrabbit.com/facts.html One of the facts says that one 10 pound female rabbit can produce 320 pounds of meat per year. Is this correct? That sounds like a lot to me, but...

Maybe I'm stereotyping (or speaking for myself) but I feel like it would be hard for me to butcher my own animal - but I've been considering it. It would save a lot of money, probably healthier than whats in the stores. I'm just wondering if I can actually do it. Any city people doing this?
