Here is a design I have for stacking rain barrels. I have two concerns, are standard joist hangars strong enough to attach the 2x4s to the posts, and if I use plastic barrels will they deform from resting on the on-edge 2x4 joists? Comments and other concerns are welcome.

I've begun to put together a system to catch rain water, I was almost done yesterday when I thought about what's IN the rain water. If you think about pollution and everything else, wouldn't it be unsafe to drink rain water? I live in the city as well. So I looked through a bunch of filters...

I ordered a rain spout diverter from Gardener's Supply because it got good reviews. My husband and his dad spent a lot of time installing it and running a line from the rain barrel to the laundry room so that I could wash our clothes in rain water. It started to rain tonight so I happily started...

We have had very high winds lately and all kinds of stuff is blowing around (including our gas grill, which blew right over despite the fact that it weighs about 85 pounds without the propane). As I drove along the river road, I spotted a blue 55-gallon plastic barrel in the ditch. It musta...

So, my rain barrel set up is nothing special, and was designed to be so. My main thing here is a guy at home depot.. lol Anyway, I am looking for a spigot of some sort to attach to my 35 gallon garbage can, I just bought for this, and this employee points the way. He then follows me and asks me...

I've got (4) 50 gallon water barrels hooked up to my downspouts. They stay full most of the time, due to the amount of rain we've had this year. The problem is that the water is stagnant in the barrels and stinks. Does anyone put bleach or something else in their rain barrels to purify the...

I have gone through the search function and well it seems everyone talking about rain barrels own their property, so this question is slightly unique and I thought may be worth posting. For the past year or so I haven't even given rain barrels much of a thought since moving because we are...

Hi, I just acquired the below 30-gallon food grade barrel for purposes of water storage. (1) If I decide to store the barrel-containing-water in basement, then assuming there's a power outtage for many days in winter with no heat in basement, would the water turn to ice? The basement is more...

How many people use rain barrels to supplement the watering of their gardens and cut down on costs? If there was no central water supply it seems that this would be your primary way of watering when no rain is available? Anyone know of some good retail rain barrels?

For our garden and landscaping I want to add rain barrels in order to collect runoff from the roof. I have often heard that rain water is preferable to chlorinated city water for plants. Additionally, it will cut down on our water usage and also reduce stress on the storm sewers during, well...
