I think a good axe is an important part of ones kit, especially when your AO is forested. However, I haven't yet found an axe that suits my needs. I tried to get by on a crappy walmart Pack Axe, but if I ever needed to do any real work, I know that it wont cut it (literally). I'm probably...
  2. Knives, Swords & Axes
First I was thinking of buying Fiskars, but this one had just as good reviews. Also, the Trial Boss has some serious Viking look and style, the Fiskars is maybe also good, but I wouldn't be too proud to own one of those. :)

Hey guys, you know how I love to do these mods on Cold Steel hawks. Here is 27 hour (roughly) modification I done on a Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk that was influenced by Old West Culture. I got some ideas from a bunch of pictures and designs from research. I completely stripped it, sanded, filed...
  4. Knives, Swords & Axes
Here is a Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk I modded. Just figured I would share it. I did some filework on the head as well as a lemon and mustard patina. I wood burned the designs portraying Apache Indian designs from my personal research. All finished up with some gunstock stain and polyurethane.

An instructional video showing what I did with a hatchet I found buried in a friend's garden! It had a loose head which has on the wrong way around and covered in rust, and even the handle was the wrong way around. So I got it out, dried it, scrubbed the rust off of the head, filed a new edge...

Here are my newest primitive weapons i have made. the first is a handcrafted 21" tomahawk. this tomahawk has a flintknapped 7.5" stone blade. the handle has an indian chief carved into it. it is wrapped in suede the second tomahawk is 22". it had a 5.5" double bladed head along with a 4"...

So, a long time ago i picked up this Normark Hunter's Skinning Axe: I have babied it over the years and except for a couple of instances of using it for light wood work it has been primarily used to process small game, ie: removing feet , head and tail, even once to help to skin a deer. I...
  10. Primitive Weapons, Bows and Crossbows
I made these tomahawks last year while camping, since then I have been making a lot nicer pieces and will post them soon. The heads are just perfect rocks I found along the beach in northern Wisconsin, they are in the handle like a rock and don't budge! I wrapped them in sinew and leather and...

Hey everyone! I've been a member of these forums for a while now, lurked plenty, and now I figure it's time I put a little product review out there. Living up North its challenges, and when you're outside when Fahrenheit meets Celsius (at -40 degrees) you most definitely need to find a way to...
  12. DIY - Do It Yourself
I've had this posted in the blades section, but think it's definitely appropriate here. I took my old, worn & well worked Lowe's Kobalt Hatchet ($14) and used it to practice my restoration skills (in case I come across a nice vintage piece in the future). I sanded, stripped and cleaned...

Looking at my tools, I think about how I'd love to be able to take a lot of it with me if I have to GOOD, but that's not reasonable. So, I decided to keep a "build civilization from scratch" tool kit to keep in my truck. At the very least, if I had my vehicle with me, I can build shelter and...
  14. Knives, Swords & Axes
Now that I'm more experienced with my blades, I've been thinking about what I'd really need in a survival knife. The thing that I'd see myself using it for most would be for fire & shelter building. When I've used my ESEE-6, I've looked at stuff I'd want to tackle (like chopping down small...
  15. Knives, Swords & Axes
I've been doing my best to "not" make decisions based on emotion when acquiring my gear. When it came to axe choice, I was set on getting an Eswting Camper's Axe. I've used Estwing products my entire life and they have served me well. BUT! Once I saw Wetterlings & Gransfor Bruks Axes, I knew...
  16. Knives, Swords & Axes
I was bored today so I picked up a mill bastard file, whipped out the Lanskey Puck and my Smith Pocket Pal and picked up everything in my attic that I could work with. I sharpened the blades on my $8. Harbor Freight Survival Knife, put a nice edge on my Ontario Military Sawback Machete...
  17. Knives, Swords & Axes
Here are the next purchases I plan to make. Instead of buying 1 ESEE small blade, I decided to buy 3 more knives in one shot. 1 small blade + 2 more 5"+ blades. I'll save the high quality small knife purchase for my next round. I'd appreciate any input in my budding collection. Phase I...

First off, sorry if this subject has been beat to death, but I can't get the search function to work well for me, so I didn't really find anything on it. I had one of those "duh" moments last night. I was watching the newest episode of Dual Survival and I noticed dave canterbury was carrying a...
