first rifle

I am looking to get my hands on my first rifle, scoped preferably, for a survival/defense situation for less than $600, if possible. I am right handed but left eye dominant. I'm a big kind of guy, 6'0" and 220 lbs. Any information on what i should get or consider would be very well appreciated.
