What's best way to store ammo? leave the ammo in original boxes or loose in an ammo can?

I have gotten my hands on a variety of ammo cans and have the opportunity to get many more all free. I'm looking for ideas as to what are you folks doing with ammo cans (other than storing ammo), any ideas that you have would be great. Thanks
