Default Looters, how to make them pass you by

Advertise Here

Ok guys here we are, after the fact, whether it be hurricane, earth quake, nuke strike on washington, what ever it might be.

You have some of your family or friends staying with you because you have a generator and a big wood burning bar-b-q pit. You are the only person in the whole neighborhood with fresh meat and a way to cook it. NOW, how do you keep it??

This is what I did after Hurricane Rita passed through my area

Have a couple of people stay up late at night. Have an outdoor fireplace in the front yard. The members that stay up late can have a nice camp fire right there in the front yard. If the power is off, everything will be dark, except your yard. Looters are criminals, and most of them do not want to go where they can be seen - kinda like roaches.

Have the blinds to your house open so people driving around will see you up and moving about.

Spread your cars and trucks out, park what ever spare vechiles you have in your neighbors driveway.

Do not cook inside, use your coleman stoves or bar-b-q pit in the front yard where people can see you. Make it look like you are having a party and having a good time - which you should be.

Be seen with a rifle or shotgun in hand or slung over your shoulder. Long arms are easier to see then pistols. It would be quit a sight for a looter to see you with an AR-15 over your shoulder, while standing at your grill cooking some steaks.

That's good info, thanks.

I did read and see video of people that hid out in their houses during Katrina only to have armed confrontations with looters/thieves. Safety in numbers is obvious.

Good idea Kev. Looters are the scum of the earth preying on mans misery during hard times. Rule 762 parragraph 3008/ 556 should be preached.

Well, there are definitely two trains of thought on this. one is the black out the house stay inside and bar the doors. sort of the hunker down approach. and the other is to make a bright up front stance on it sort of like Kev is saying. The only problem is that I think that even though you are chasing of "Mr. Big bad Looter", I think at the same time you are INVITING "Mr. I am your neighbor that hasn't spoken to you in 4 months, but would not mind a free steak". Which is worse? one looter or 12 neighbors looking for a meal?

LOL

I guess I would take the neighbors, but force myself to prepare a little more food and water to accomidate what they are begging off of you.

I know you'd know this Kev, but one thing to bear in mind on any night watch that being next to a campfire will destroy your night vision. Yeah I want to project an armed presence, But I don't want to be blind while making it.

I like Kev's idea on the one front. It makes a potential target, YOU, known to be active, alert and dangerous. That has merit where the looters are sheeple types and prefer no confrontation.

The evil sheeple... welllll, they just might stand back a few nights and do some recon.... using the fire and vehicles to count residents, inventory firearms, and get a feel for how much supplies may be present by numbering the individuals that are living reasonably well over there.

Maybe a combination??
* Park the cars around, like he suggested, but in a way that reduces a mobile looter's transit options.
* Keep a lived-in appearance, but without much publicly advertised hardware and food. If they want to know whatcha got, they have to come in close, where your own recon assets are doing their job on the bad guys.
* Keep the bulk of supplies out of sight of the LEOs, and somewhat protected from searches.
* Always use disposable weapons on parade. Something effective, but something that you won't miss too much if confiscated. Let the law feel good about their efforts, but not TOO good.
* And, of course, be ready to protect life and property with appropriate force if necessary.

...and I gotta throw this in.... Kev, you do a great job with this site. Thanks for what you do.

For me that would be paragraph 762 subsection 51, cross referenced to Part 308. Volume 40. And also cross referenced to version 556.

And string em up a 1/4 to 1/2 mile away with a sign about this is what happens to looters.

If dealing with black bears, this would work. If dealing with grizzlies, obviously it wouldn't.

I think a good strategy would be to have the BBQ in the back yard, and have a couple people laying on the roof watching the area out front and around.

Default Deja Vu.......... All over again !

From the looks of Fernly Neveda, they maybe trying to figure that out right now how to make looters pass them by over the next couple of days. This photo was taken Sat.
Kinda looks like a picture after hurricane Katrina.

Default looters and other undesireables

Yeah a presense can be good but a hidden sniper...I mean lookout is also good.

Another highly underated item is a megaphone. I keep one in my camper trailer. I have used it to find lost children-mine and others, Stopped some guys who were riding ATVs through my camp, quieted some rowdy campers one night, stopped some guys interfering with a hunt and lastly stopped a break in. It is loud and people often assume iit is Law enforcement. There is a reason patrol cars often have them. They work.

The Phrase " STOP OR WE WILL SHOOT- LEAVE OR WE FIRE IN 3 SECONDS - 3 -2 -1"
out of a 25 watt megaphone on high volume are very effective.

If a natural disaster happend I would hide valuable items underground in my woods. I would position people around my property neighbors property etc to be lookouts. Have a guy both ends of streets with a way to signal if the police are comming incase they confiscate your wepons or goods.

Honestly, my post-hurricane experience has taught me that vigilant neighbors and activity are all that it takes. Looters mostly look for abandoned houses and otherwise easy targets. They want to loot, not fight and rob outright. A spotlight and half a dozen men usually does the trick. A vehicle moving around helps too, but noise is key. Hell, turn on a radio and never make it look like everyone is asleep. If I were to offer one word of advice it would be activity. Activity and awareness are the most effective deterrents. Remember, there are going to be plenty of people that got the hell out and left everything to the vultures. Let the looters have their fill on the abandoned houses and the like. The idea is not to build a fortress or defend the entire city. It is to become a meal that will prove more costly than the benefit.

Sitting quietly doesn't help the situation. The idea is to deter looters, not stalk them from a deer stand. Don't draw them in. Make 'em look from a distance, turn away and never think twice. You want to warrant no more than 5 seconds of attention. Ideally, the looter will look at you and think something like "nope, not worth it" and never even give it a second thought.
