Default fish antibiotic companies closing down

Advertise Here

It started last week with Aquatic Pharmacy's web site stating "Restructuring to comply with FDA laws." They also pulled their ebay listings.

Yesterday aquaticbiotics.net's web site went dark with no message. They too pulled all their ebay listings.

There are still some web sites that sell quality fish antibiotics and anyone interested in healthy fish might want to stock up while these sites are still available.

Here are a few sites ...

They aren't shutting down. They're restructuring to meet new regulations. You can buy the same meds from veterinary suppliers. In fact, the same meds in mammal format are generally cheaper per dose and available in larger bulk quantities.

Yes, how will this effect me....ummm...errr my fish! They keep getting sick on me!!

Of course, I think it's a life style choice personally. I mean, if they would stop staying up all night partying, and actually eat the vegetables I give them.....

I have no clue. That's all the info the fish med folks have given us so far. At least that I've seen.

From what I have been noticing they are replacing the pills with packets of powder.

So you have to buy the empty gel caplets and fill with the powder.

Mike, do you have a vendor you'd care to recommend?

I've never really stuck with a single vendor. I've only ordered twice and both times from different companies I googled. Unfortunately, I made this same mistake when I used to order offshore. There was a website that I found prices and reviews on called drugbuyers.com. It closed down, and I never kept info on the legitimate companies I dealt with, and now have no way to find them again. That's when I first started ordering vet meds.

The new regs are supposed to reduce the amount of antibiotics found in food animals (i.e. the fish, beef, pork that you get in the grocery). There is new required labeling. They (FDA) are trying to get voluntary compliance with only using human-use antibiotic drugs under veterinary supervision, rather than just being fed to animals willy-nilly to enhance growth. There is an FDA FAQ here.

So you'll have to have a Vet prescribe it for your fish now?

No. But if you have a fish farm, it is recommended that you only give them antibiotics under vet supervision.

Ah, I see. Well, the scare made me buy my first small supply of the top 5 that Patriot Nurse recommended.

Probably a good idea. If the "voluntary" effort doesn't succeed in reducing antibiotics in food, then I presume that the voluntary vet involvement will become mandatory.

The thing is, you can't really bring your fish into the vet for treatment. I was able to order about a week ago with no problems whatsoever. I don't remember the site I used off the top of my head, but I can look it up if anyone cares.

I don't see that message on Aquatic Pharmacy. It looks like all their items are still in place.
