Or other REALLY long range rangefinder device.

Ok Ladies & Germs, time to put you tinfoil hats on.

I have been tasked, one I took willingly, with developing a "base station" that can be used by researchers to locate the range of visual targets really far away. By researchers, I mean some friends at MUFON. (Yes, that MUFON, the Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network.)

In WW2 and beyond, artillery was trained initially by using a coincidence rangefinder. This is a mechanical and optical way to get a range reading by lining up two images until they match. (Or something similar.)

Well, I need the same technology today. The problem is, everything is electronic and or uses a laser. Well some of the things these researchers see are called, "glowing balls of light." It's kind of hard to use a laser based rangefinder on a glowing ball of light through which the laser passes through...

It's further hard to use things designed for hunting and snipers, because they assume the target is an animal or a person and most rangefinders only work over common rifle ranges- not artillery ranges.

Lastly, these "glowing balls of light," have been known to fry electronics.

Comparators won't work because we don't know the actual or expected size of what we may be looking at.

But a coincidence rangefinder would work, regardless of the target's size, shape or distance. So long as it will remain still long enough to line it up, the coincidence rangefinder approach should work.

Anybody know a modern version of the coincidence rangefinder and where to get it?

Anybody know where I can get an "Army Surplus" WW2 or later coincidence rangefinder?

Anybody know of any electronic or other optical range finding system that might work? Again, we could be talking about miles, not yards or meters here.

I am willing to consider anything, even a modern device, if it can work over very long ranges.

Thanks guys!
