I can get appointments within a month if needed3-6, and I've been in VA 's from upstate BY to New Orleans.

and I've routinely been sent outside network to the private sector using Veteran's choice if I can't get in timely to a referral specialist, YEP, of course getting THAT approval takes 3-6 months. VA has sent me to the WRONG appointment (making up example: to an ear nose and throat doctor for a broken elbow); then don't qualify/reset 30 day clock 'because I had been seen ' the fact that nothing happened beside 'oh, you weren't calls to come here' was irrelevant.

or if I need something like physical therapy, tests, etc. my congressman 's aid called the delay "silly" on friday. Still waiting on the PT I requested in DECEMBER. (8 months ago.) Oh.... VA 'agrees it should continue '


I just cut this quote from Friday's email from him to me:

I understand the need to provide medical care to military veterans and the poor, but given government's atrocious record to date, it would be better for everyone to get government almost completely out of healthcare.

I am sure there are loads of problems out there. But I can only report about the excellent care I have received at MY VAMC. I have been to VA docs in Texas, Florida and now Mountain Home VA in Tennessee. It is important to say that I take a VERY proactive approach to managing my heathcare. I am a Cancer survivor, late onset Type 1 Diabetes, and have had open heart surgery with an aortic valve replacement. So I've been through the mill, medically.

I did not have much to complain about in Florida, just some real stupid inefficiencies at the Tampa VA and some messy billing issues to deal with there. In the new Orlando VA hospital and the CBOC, I was pleasantly surprised. In the Ocala CBOC, it was very disorganized and I had to correct them several times. A Vet who was not right on top of his/her own care could have been really messed up.

Then I moved to the Johnson City, TN area and started seeing my docs at the James Quellen VAMC. The biggest problem I have found is the campus was built over so many years, the building and room numbers are hard to figure out and find. But the Staff and Docs have been GREAT!! In addition to pleasant, helpful and professional services, they go out of their way to make life a little easier.

They have been very short-staffed for years all through the Obama Admin, but now they have funding to hire and train new staff and they are just great. They sometimes run behind schedule, which can be annoying to some Vets, but they take time to LISTEN to each patient AND their family members. That can take time.

Wish all the VA was like this.... I know it is not. Partly, this is just such a nice country town area, where people are pleasant and calm. It reflects in the staff here. Big city facilities are staffed by folks that are in too much of a rush.... Things get missed that can't be missed in medicine.
