Yes Lui, but unless God had something against us enjoying the taste of bacon, there had to be a better reason than, "because I told you so!"

Well at least that's what I hope, and some of the evidence seems to point.

At least you are honest and admit when you are clueless (some of the time).

DrReco, I'm interested in reading what you consider "...and some of the evidence seems to point." Just truly curious as to what you see there. Thanks. Lui

In this conversation we were specifically discussing pork and why the Abrahamic religions (excluding Christianity) consider it unclean to eat. It would be unlikely that ancient Jews and Muslims understood germs and parasites, especially considering that Judaism and Islam are thousands of years old, and predate van Leeuwenhook's discovery of bacteria by a large gap.

Yet it was pointed out that pigs are extremely prone to worms and other parasites, and even more so in a climate like that of the Mid East. In fact even today, pork is a cause of neurocysticercosis, which is an infection caused by tapeworms leaving cysts in the brain. This is becoming increasingly important as a health issue as neurocysticercosis is the leading cause of seizures and epilepsy in the developing world.

Now perhaps I am wrongly assuming that God forbid eating pork because it posed a health risk, but that is exactly what I'm proposing. I am no expert on Jewish law, but I believe there is also a law forbidding entering the room of a sick person without being covered. This would seem to me, a way to protect from germs and the spread of illness. However, these cultures would not have known or thought about illness in terms of germs and exposure.

So I am proposing that at least some of these laws were based in practical sciences that were not yet understood, rather than being based in asinine rules and regulations from a controlling deity who just wanted to ruin the fun. That is a big postulation on my part, and it could be wrong as I stated before... But I hope I'm not, as a man of faith personally, who doesn't want to be believing in a big party pooper God. lol

Thyme2bprepped....well all they knew was that God told them to do something, and if they didn't they would probably be stoned to death by their peers. Sucks!

WILL, I don't really get it either. I'm offering up my personal thoughts which are incomplete. I will say that in all of my scientific readings so far, eating meat presents more health risks than not, so make of that what you will. However, I still eat meat. Just trying to make sense of ancient religious laws with modern science which may be impossible.

And yes, I have probably derailed the thread and must apologize to the OP.

Yes it is. Not to mention his uncle.

'My uncle, who lived in the USA for more than 20 years, and by the grace of God, hated everything about the country of infidels, received me at the airport.'

Then why is he still here? To make money from the infidels and send it home to his beloved Pakistan? Feel free to leave anytime.
