Default Youtube mp4's no longer useable :(

I have been downloading mp4s from youtube for a few months now. They are mostly all factual how-to kind of stuff. Sometimes I go back and check info on them and have not had any problem opening them. Today I went to look at some videos that I downloaded last week and they wouldn't play. I got an error message from windows media player. VLC would only play the audio. I did some searching and found several people saying that YT has a 48 hour limit on downloaded stuff...but I have had this for more than 48 hours. And a program that I downloaded a few hours ago will not play. What is going on?

How are you downloading the videos? I've used some youtube to MP4 conversion sites with good luck. Files still play months later. Try this site:
ytmp3.cc
Works for me every time. I use VLC without issue. However I've also used the K-lite codec pack with media player classic with great results:
codecguide.com
Let us know how it works out.
PS the URLs got flagged by the forum and I had to reformat. Please don't remove them I'm trying to help.

I have not had any problems downloading and playing YouTube videos.

Use this plugin with FireFox. If you send the guy a donation, he gives you access to the Pro version, which allows you to download MP3s and HD videos. I download MP3s for podcasts (Joe Rogan, etc) and listen to them in my car.

Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express

YouTube periodically disables the plugin, but the author always finds a way to fix it within a couple of days.

Also, use programs like MediaInfo to see video and audio codecs of files.

Programs like Jdownloader can download 1080p with subtitle files, not to mention videos from sites like ok.ru, but the program is sometimes flagged for containing PUPs, and the DL speed can be slow.

An alternative is WinX Youtube Downloader, which can capture playlists, get 1080p, and has fast DL speeds, but subtitle DLs require a manual process, and it requires some tweaking to get other audio codecs.

Youtube-DLG is similar to WinX, but subtitles are in VTT format.

For Firefox addons, there's Youtube Video and Audio Downloader, but no playlists, and only until 720p.

For DL managers, Ant Download Manager can capture video from different sites and accelerate DL speed, but it's not free. I'm only using it because a website gave it as a giveaway for the day.
