Is the future FIL the last person on this planet with that last name? If not, nothing will be accomplished. His son-in-law will have a name that was not inherited.

No way I'd take a chick's last name but I'm not gay either.

Yeah, I'm gonna say that if I took the name for the sake of the FIL, I might as well give him these too. He can set them on his fireplace mantle for all the world to see.

Itís kind of a moot point for me, since my wife and I donít share last names now. For the sake of argument, say she - Ms Ima Grayman, orders something. I accept delivery, and the delivery person will assume Iím Mr Grayman... but Iím not... rarely do I even bother to straighten it all out. Who cares?

When my nephew got married last year his wife didn't take his name but that didn't stop me from writing out their (gift) check to Mr. & Mrs. XXXXX XXXXXXX, and you know what..... they cashed it!

No, I'm not a limp-wristed Liberal who is willing to indulge in that Generation Z nonsense.

Default The Taking of "Alias" Surnames Has a Very Long History

I kind of agree with those who sense there could be a dangerous power dynamic going on in the situation posed by the OP. However...changing one's surname for the sake of an inheritance and to carry on another family line really has a long and honourable history, in England, anyway, and I understand in Asia as well.

Maybe someone else who does genealogy has mentioned this, but if so I missed it. Surnames didn't really get going in England until the 14th century, and for the first 200 years there was a lot of variability both in who took what name, and what formalities were used to change names.

However the "alias" surname, where a man changed or added to his surname, became common enough in the 15th to 18th centuries that many family histories will find them in marriage and death registers, where you will see "Henry Smith, alias Jones" or The Ireland Tenures Act, 1662, refers to "Dame Jane Chichester, alias Itchingham, wife."

One of the most common reasons for a man to change his surname was in order to receive an inheritance and carry on another family line (whether of his wife's family or some maternal relative). My father's line had exactly such a name change in the 1500's.

yes, hence the ROFL emoji. And I was yanking yours too. If that was my last name I would have tied the umbilical cord around my neck in the womb and got it over with.

The reason is that the FIL is the last one in his family to have the last name and he has no other daughters and he wants to continue.

Would you be willing to take the last name?

I can't believe 16 people voted yes. Sad commentary on our society but explains why we are in the position we are in.
