Default SHTF and you!

It seems that there is a serious gap in the varying definitions of what SHTF means. According to some, it’s a simple home invasion. Be advised, I don’t want Wiki or dictionary definitions, I want what YOU see it as. I’m not asking what will hit the fan, I just want to know your definition.

I believe it is necessary for all of us to get on the same page so there is no confusion.

*EDIT*

I believe that with every viewpoint posted we, in turn, get on the same page.

I realize there are SO many things that can go wrong and be viewed as SHTF so how can we effectively reply to a question involving a SHTF scenario when we all have a different view of what that is.

That is why I posted this, to get a taste of everyone’s opinion so that when a question is posted, we can effectively respond with that in mind.

My definition of wshtf would be simple. The widespread breakdown of society as a whole caused by natural disaster, invasion by an outside force, internal tyranny or little gray men landing in space craft... OH CRAP!!

There is no single definition. It could e a Katrina scenario (regional), a chemical spill (Local), or a national event (nuke or emp) or any one of a number of other things.

This is just a general term for when things go seriously wrong. None of the people on this forum who are making serious preparations are geared towards one single event but any number of possibilities. There is not getting on the same page about SHTF definition, there isn't just one page but an entire Encyclopedia of possibilities.

Anytime the department pages my husband. It is never good news when that danged thing goes off. It means one of three things:

1. Someone has died.
2. 12 hour shifts, all days' off cancelled until further notice.
3. Manhunt.

Each time that thing goes off it just underscores the need for us to be prepared for whatever may come. We are like everyone else ... we plan, we run scenarios and then we deal with whatever comes down the pike.

(God, I will be glad when he can retire ...)

To my way of thinking, a SHTF situation is anything that drastically changes your way of life as you know it for the long term. It could be your house burning down, a divorce, death of a loved one, job loss, a serious IRS audit, electing anyone named Obama to the office of POTUS, etc. These are just some example of the SHTF...your mileage may vary.

To me, it's a change in my current situation or living conditions that threatens to impact my living standards. A loss of both mine and wife's incomes, or a loss of our savings, would have been SHTF events. So is EMP, a blizzard, or an evacuation due to industrial accident.

We'll never be on the same page because the term can have so many possible meanings. Each of us worries about our own version/s of it. To me, it's any disruption of life that isn't going to be corrected shortly like a power outage or something. It could be financial, political, disease, large scale natural disaster, etc. I don't play the scenario game so I just try to prepare for whatever can happen, whether short, medium or long term.

For me, the SHTF, is anything that would cause me and my family to be on our own, for the foreseeable future(months or years).
Therefore Katrina would not have counted as one, because help was on the way.

But I believe that the time is coming when “no help will be on the way”, and we are going to have to truly take care of ourselves, for months or years.
--------------------------------------------------
-None of the following, would be a SHTF by itself, but together they would be-
(1) Loss of the electrical grid: (Being without it for months:)
(2) Server shortage of fuel: (For the trucks that bring food to the grocery stores:)
(3) Terrorist attack: (That shuts down the economy or spreads radio activity:)
(4) Martial law: (The government turning against it’s citizens:)
(5) -and so on-
--------------------------------------------------
The Swine flu getting very bad wouldn’t be, because “help is on the way”!

Am I missing anything?

I tend to believe for it to be a true SHTF it has to be wide spread not regional. Rainier blows I still go to work. If we are hit be an EMP that wipes out the system nation wide I will be headin for BOL. I call that a true SHTF.

On the most other lists or forums that I've been on TSHTF means anything that changes your way of life that you would have a hard time dealing with. Actual end of society events are called TEOTWAWKI. On this forum though the definition of TSHTF is more lax, meaning that people change it back and forth between end of society events and losing a job. I don't read TEOTWAWKI very often here. I try to use the definitions that are set down by the people on whatever forum or list I happen to be on at the time.

Based on some of the posts I've seen on this site, for some people, TSHTF is when they go to WalMart and there's only one box of 9mm on the shelf and no cans of Beenie Weenie...

I would say whenever the government shuts down along with all its services (waste removal, police force), or when food is no longer available at stores, that's when SHTF.

I use the term to describe any situation where I would need my preps ( or would be in trouble without them).

Same here. My definition WTSHTF involves a common breakdown of society (lack of resources, etc.). But like you said, my bigger concern is the smaller scale, more likely scenario like a natural disaster.

Right now I'm prepping my custom tailored disaster guide to blizzards since that's what's most likely in New England. That means expecting lack of water (pipes burst in winter), no electricity, no heat, no travel (roads totally shut down). So once you know what the problems will be, you know how to prepare for them.
