I'm also in Northern Ontario, there appears to be several SHTF possibilities which include weather, 45 below or lower, forest fires, snow events, electrical power loss etc. I basically am set up for travel emergencies with a survival bag in my truck and a get out of dodge set up at home for quick evacuations. All of my gear is purchased with cold weather as one of the greatest problems. We have only one highway which allows evacuation and at least twice it's been closed both ways for long term. A possibility exists to use recreational trails, but the vast distances would require huge fuel loads for snow machines or ATVs.. I have totally discounted any evacuation by water over Lake Superior as far to dangerous.

I live on Ireson Island, near Manitoulin. This will be 16 winters this January. If I have learned anything, it is that you had better be in good shape. Complete reliance on mechanical and electrical devices without manual skills to back them up when they fail leads to huge problems. Wood stove, firewood, manual ice auger, axes, saws, oil lamps, snowshoes, sled, Goretex rainsuit with pants. You would be advised to learn how to snare and trap, and hunt and fish. I was taught by my First Nation friends here, Treat technology as the luxury it is.

I have a property in the Hearst area that I will be building on in the next few years, going to be my retirement property. Would love to meet people up there at some point.

We just got back to home base from being out in the bush for 3 weeks of hunting( no nothing this year)so I am back to reply to this thread...

Sudbury we travel through there when we head back down south for visits with family..can work on a meet and greet....

Hearst is about another 3-4 hours north from us, have been up to that area and surrounding areas..only thing in Hearst is the rail line..and in a few years..what if something in the SHTF category happens soon(just askin)how would you develop then(you don't have to answer, but thought I would ask anyways

If something happens before I can develop it I'm half way up sh*t creek without a paddle. Regardless of the face that I am currently 10 hours away from the property with a vehicle.

Financially I cannot start sinking money into it for another few years, and logistically I still have another year plus before I can finish the ground work for construction.

I read somewhere that Hearst is closing down one of there main sources of jobs..anyways

We have found living in our 5th wheel for the winter not to bad..you may want to look into a winterizable trailer(they are out there) to start with..Our one trailer in a Nash has winter windows and very solid...

Here is an idea from southern ontario. Quit voting liberal or ndp, soon they will put a carbon tax on the very trees you use to heat with. They are also coming for all semi autos and going to ban all hand guns.
