Scrap metal is fine, but it's not a currency.
Its barter.

I'd like to see hos other videos about smelting stuff down.

It's illegal to melt US coins, thus far, but I'd like to experiment with foreign coins.
Anyone can try to make a paper-based alternate currency, I was going to try a coin-based one myself... but its technically illegal, and in a state with no sales tax there is no early advantage to help you get it rolling before SHTF.
Bummer...

Thank you tubalcain for the video. Certainly the importance of industrial metals will be evident when rebuilding after a long-term post-cataclysmic event, but I thought I might mention a few currency & barter items that would be in HUGE DEMAND days after any system wide shut-down:

#1,2, & 3: PRESCRIPTION NARCOTICS I am sorry to say, but a sizable percentage of the US population (I'd say 10-20%) is completely dependent on the likes of vicodin, percocet, etc...Let some people go a day without them and they go nuts. Easy to sell on the street and even non-addicts (read:gangstaz) understand their value. Entire swathes of our subculture already lock them up for use as currency. To a lesser extent your anxiety drugs also apply- Valium, Ativan, Xanax, etc....It is an unfortunate by-product of a soft population with poor pain coping skills and the lack of understanding that pain, both physical and emotional, is simply part of life and has been and will for eons.

#4 Antibiotics- cipro, doxycycline, and keflex come to mind. Those three alone will treat 90% of all common infections -pneumonia, skin infections, sinus, etc... and are dirt cheap.....for now.

#5 Insulin. 20 million diabetics. 'nuff said. VERY short shelf life tho.

#6 E.D. Drugs- Viagra, Cialis, Levitra. You'd be surprised.....

Just my input from the medical corner.

Money is a collective mental agreement.
Our money has no precise definition and is blurred by the complicated terminology. Scrip is an American term for any substitute for currency which is not legal tender and is often a form of credit. Scrips were created as company payment of employees and also as a means of payment in times where regular money is unavailable, such as remote coal towns, military bases, ships on long voyages, or occupied countries in war time. Other forms of scrip include subway tokens, arcade tokens and tickets, and "points" on some websites.

Considering the recent news in the energy sector, the alternative currency might be of Chinese origin.
