Default Help me build an Automatic chicken door

Advertise Here

Looks like I am going to need take a job to make up for slow times in my business, and the manufactures are so busy here that they want me to work 58 hours a week (it's gonna suck).
Anyways, Since I may not be around to open a chicken coup in the morning, and close it at night, I want to make an automatic door. I know they sell for some bucks, but one I can't spend like that yet, and two, I love to build things, so if anyone knows how to make one I would appreciate a bunch of ideas on how.
Thanx!!

That would be great letsgetreal, what do you do when nobody is home and the door stays open after dark, letting the opossums and raccoons kill all of the chickens.

Neat idea. But couldn't you just make a varmint proof pen and leave the door open?

Sounds interesting, but how to ensure that the chickens are all in the coop before the door closes? What if one is standing in the doorway? Love my chickens but they're not too bright.
Would love to see photos when you finish and report how it works.

That's a good question. My thought was to have it close around 9. Too early for the critters, and so late that all the birds should be bedded down.

Okay, I'm in. I'm building the farm supply coop right now, and since we close at 5:30, we need a way to close the coop doors at 9, once the hens bed down. I've already built the front panel of the coop with a sliding vertical door that can be opened from outside the pen. The entire pen is made of old feed signs from around the store, and the door is weighted down and locks with a strip of 1/4"x1.5" high carbon steel stock. All I really need to do is build a release to drop the door at a set time. I think the clock idea will work great. Going to check around for one this afternoon.

http://www.poultrybutler.com/automat...door/index.php

just bought one ths fall and installed it in a day.
Works great.

I did not use the dusk to dawn feature.
Instead I used a manuel timer that I can set the time on.

That way no worries the girls arent in the coop on time.

When I was about six I had a very negative episode with a turkey vulture.
I tried to catch it on the way home from the store. It was standing over a rabbit that had been run over and I just walked up and grabbed it around the neck.

I thought it was an eagle and I was going to keep it for a pet!

The vulture turned his head around and projectile vomited on me while shredding my tee shirt.

I turned him loose and ran home leaving the grocerys in the road.

When my mother asked me what happened , I told them an eagle had attacked me. They wanted to know where the grocerys were and I told them i had run away and left them in the road.

Dad agreed to go back with me to get the grocerys , (I was too scared to go alone).

When he saw the Eagle he said, " My God son , that is a vulture and it could have put your eyes out".

This led to a series of bad dreams where huge birds flew away with me in their talons!

About a month went by and I was sent to spend three weeks with my aunt and uncle on the farm.

The first morning my aunt took me out to the chicken coop and assigned me a daily chore. I was to let them out of the coop and feed them. After this I was to go in to
the coop and gather the eggs from the nests and bring them to the house where they were cleaned sorted and put in egg cartons ready for market.

The only problem , (which i would not disclose was that I was terrified of the chickens , due to the vulture incident!

I went out the next morning and tried to feed them but when I would throw the feed , they ran in my direction.

I got a tobacco stick and any chicken that came close to me got whacked with it.

After about three days fifteen chickens died.

My aunt found the stick and it had some blood and feathers stuck to it !

I got whacked and I confessed that I was scared of the chickens and I told them about the vulture !

I spent the next three weeks hoeing the garden insted of feeding the chickens and gathering eggs.

I'm still a little leary of them unless they are in a KY Fried Chicken box !

If you have house current to your coop, ie to run lights and such you can get an X-10 module to control your door status.

These can be pre-programmed or activated from your home or internet, internet means you can open or close it anything you feel the need from anywhere on the planet.

There will be some cost involved but with any project there always is.

As for the door design itself I would go with a ramp instead of a slider, at least the ramp when retracting up will toss any bird into the coop vs the guillotine action of a slider slamming shut.

Good luck and post pics when you get it figured out.
