I believe that like most apocalyptic fiction, it compresses the timeline too much

If you like that, try "The borrowed world"

Its so bad it had me laughing out loud in the middle of the nigh (I was listening to it on audiobook in bed)

In literally less than 24 hours we have people going nuts everywhere and shooting each other...just because some of the power is out. Totally preposterous. By the end of the second or third day I think the main character has killed about half a dozen people.

Furthermore, many people living in rural areas will have food set aside through canning and many grow gardens or raise chickens so I don't believe the food supply would have become critical as soon as it did.
I've been told before that to understand OSA you have to be familiar with the east. I've been told that people there are different and really would fall apart that fast.

Now be fair, I think he had only killed one nut trying to bash his head in with a tire iron.

Not sure where you got a half a dozen from.

Two or three days in (IIRC) they shoot a bunch of hill billies on four wheelers on the road. Before that a meth head on the highway.

Maybe not all at the hands of the main character but their group takes out most of a whole family of baddies and then some.

And his son and wife blow away a couple as well in the same time period.

And again, this isn't even after some apocalyptic disaster but rather just a bunch of terrorist attacks that have taken out the power and some infrastructure...just a couple of days ago.

It hasn't even been long enough for the milk to go bad and already we have all the minorities and poor people at war with everyone else.

I find that ridiculous....and a common problem in prepper fiction. It seems to assume that just everyone is going to become hyper violent zombies within hours of the lights going out.

Realistically, I think it's going to be the other way around. People trying to be normal long after normal has left the building.

There's a lot of prepper fiction scenarios on SB.

I'm a member of a disaster response/recovery organization and this is what we consistently find. Most people go out of their way to be good neighbors.

The numbers of miscreants will likely increase in a truly extreme long-term situation, but so will the community bonds as people realize their comfort (or even survival) depends upon teamwork. Literally, the history of mankind bears this out. It's why we have population centers in the first place.

I disagree (to an extent). At least in the US where people have become largely accustomed to things just getting done, stuff just being available, etc. take away instant communication and a freeze to all transportation of goods and you will very likely see good people turn ugly. Jmho

Some of them, sure. And if the event is long enough, the numbers will increase if people see their odds of surviving are greater if they cooperate with a strongman. I'd recommend preparing for that.

But not to the exclusion of all the things we have actual case studies for throughout the history of history.

There will absolutely be violence.

I but not the very next day after the power goes out.

Weeks later maybe, months later very likely...but this idea that within hours of shtf all the welfare queens, methheads and mexicans start a rampage is just silly prepper porn.

As someone who lived in Western North Carolina (Asheville area, not too far from Black Mountain), this book took extreme liberties. However, it's good for all to read. The I-40 area between Black Mountain and Old Fort is scary to drive in the rain or fog.

Could you elaborate on the liberties the author took? I just curious.
