...and Psalm 16 chanted in Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke.

The Hope of the Faithful, and the Messiah’s Victory

A Michtam of David.

Preserve[a] me, O God, for in You I put my trust.

O my soul, you have said to the Lord,
“You are my Lord,
My goodness is nothing apart from You.”

As for the saints who are on the earth,
“They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.”

Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god;
Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,
Nor take up their names on my lips.

O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup;
You [b]maintain my lot.

The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Yes, I have a good inheritance.

I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel;
My [c]heart also instructs me in the night seasons.

I have set the Lord always before me;
Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will [d]rest in hope.

For You will not leave my soul in [e]Sheol,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to [f]see corruption.

You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

So watchingtheweasels said it was a chanted hymn. So do you use the words chant/chanted/chanting? Or singing? Or either? Also, is there written music...or is it just people learn from the others over the yrs, and pass on the singing or chanting tradition?

Please know this:

The Early Church music is the reason you have musical notes in the first place and it is responsible for the entire organization of music in the West. In other words we invented the MUSICAL NOTES !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neume

So you can learn them from books.

I believe that Jesus came to provide the Holy Spirit to Teach in His place, not for men to make a religion or teach in His place.
A form of godliness is not a relationship.
Forms and rituals do not manipulate God.
A cooperative relationship with God one has His intervention and direction for every day life.
On another note , Jesus said ," Do not use vain repetition as the heathen do..."
Chants are not what he asks for . never did.
Jesus said ,Blessed are they that do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled. righteousness is not imposed rituals. righteousness is an obedient relationship via the Holy Spirit this is the law of the Father . Matthew 7;21,22,23,

I appreciate your beliefs. My beliefs are that God provided us with a pathway to follow and He put guidance in His Church. This Guidance (the Apostolic Tradition - given to men by the Holy Spirit) I study since childhood and together with the Word of God it gave me great spiritual joys.

Orthodox Evening Prayers (English) with Russian Monastery Chants from Jordanville Prayer Book ROCOR

A very good help for those of you who have difficulty disciplining your prayer life (as I often do).

Y'all, I'm at a homeschool convention, and one of the speakers made a little joke about fasting and her family being Orthodox, and I got it! Thanks to y'all. Anyway, it made me think of my Orthodox friends on here, and how y'all have explained things to me!

Speaking of Jordanville, I visited and stayed at the Holy Trinity Monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in Jordanville, NY back in the late '70s.

If my memory hasn't failed me, I recall that they had an apiary (i.e., bee raising area), ovens for baking bread, and a farm. They published most of the religious literature for ROCOR there as well.

Actually, that is exactly what ROCOR was trying to do - isolate Holy Trinity Monastery from American secular society and its temptations.

They picked a great spot to build it - Herkimer County in upstate New York north west of Albany. To the north is a protected national forest and the rest of the area is sparsely populated and consists of farms.

We were on a trip to Canada back in the day and took a detour to go to the monastery. It was like stepping back in time to Holy Orthodox Russia before the Bolshevik Revolution.

It's been almost 40 years since I was there, but I don't expect much has changed.
