"Something to think about: Toward the end of this video, the American gets frustrated that his Venezuelan friend is coming to accept the insanity of his situation as normal. At first blush, you nod and think, "Yeah, that should never be accepted as normal." Then you think about what you know is going on in Syria, Ukraine, South Sudan, Egypt, and Palestine and realize you're the kettle calling the pot black. What insanities have we accepted as normal?"

normalcy bias

I was wondering why Venezuela was being so ignored and back storied but just figured TPTB in D.C. and their media cronies don't knock a kindred spirit. What is going on there is the classic repeated over and over socialist economic and civility melt down.

normalcy bias? PC crud. deficit spending. crony capitalism. out of control fed agencies. militarization of law enforcement. 200 channels and nothing worth watching. RAP MUSIC!!!

As a whole the US and US Media is Eurocentric. Not a whole lots comes out about all the countries south of us. Not one of them. We know more about the weather in Italy than what we the most about of Central or South America.

Paraguay? Para- Who ?

Because they are a poor country. Same with Sudan, Eithiopia, Venezuela, Cambodia, and even most of Mexico.

Think of these nations as the "bad neighborhoods" on the globe. No one cares what happens there as long as it doesn't spill over into the "good neighborhoods".

By "everyone", do you mean people outside this forum? Cuz "normalcy bias" is discussed here often.

So Russia is a good nieghborhood? North Korea a good nieghborhood? Iran? I think the main denominator here ( to give credit where due) is 1st world vs 3rd world. Also I think some of it has to do with people wanting to forget that here, European are the Immigrants. Many people fascination with Europe is because they want to keep connected to where their forefathers came from, for some reason. Forgetting that most Immigrants from there ( back in the day) were giving Europe the finger as they left.

Lets put it this way. Venezualia and cambodia have very little strategic value. Other places have high strategic value either with location or natural resources. Other places that have neither get tossed to the side.

Ukraine was also being ignored for weeks and weeks, while tires were being burned in the streets, protestors were clashing with police and being shot at, and things were building to a head. The mainstream media was incredibly late to the party, and even now is struggling to decide which is of greater relevance: Flight 370, or Russia devouring a sovereign nation piecemeal while the world watches.

Here in 'Murica we aren't interested in reporting or reading the news. Just give us Dancing With The Stars and our Obamaphones and we're happy.

Venezuela is not a poor country. They have natural resources out the wazoo... it's just damn hard doing business there because of the crazies.
