It looks like toothpaste has a shelf life if it contains fluoride.

Does Toothpaste Expire?

There should be a date stamp on the crimp if it contains fluoride.

It looks like fluoride is effective for two years. I don't know about non-fluoride toothpaste, but articles say it should be safe to use.

Why Does Toothpaste Expire, and Is It Safe to Continue Using It?

If the flouride dissipates the polishing agent in the toothpaste would still clean your teeth and the flavoring would still give you minty fresh breath, I would reckon.
I'm using 4 or 5 year old toothpaste right now with no problems.
I think the only problem would be if old flouride morphs into something harmful. That, I don't know.
