UV82 uses its own battery type, a spare is about half the price of a complete radio. I just ordered some, declined getting the hp 8 watt version, ~$25-30. Just see the 3000ma battery is just over $10, the 3800ma is ~$15.

As good a choice as any for your situation...at least it gets you a baseline capability.

Here are the FRS/GMRS/MURS frequencies for you to program in.

I wouldnt bother with them. Kinda of a fun toy to learn on but I would never trust them to do anything serious or not fall apart

I finally settled on which ones I'd go with & ordered this pair of tri-powered with the big batteries, but you can get the identical kit with the smaller batteries for 10 bucks less.

Then I decided to try this tri-band model, a bit spendier than some but seems strong on features & has a 4.5 star rating with over 600 reviews.

I guess down the road I'll have to get some more antennas too. While I haven't looked around for one yet, I am curious if they make an antenna that works with all 3 bands so I won't have to buy two antennas for the tri-band, which would be nice also for the fact I wouldn't have to swap them out to use a different band.
