I saw some hipster dufus idiot on YouTube "driving" with his feet out the window while reading a book. I could not help hoping for a fatal outcome for him.

This is the worst idea ever to be invented. Please someone tell me the world is not this stupid.

I'm sure the dead woman's family has an open lawsuit against Uber, and they can't/won't say anything that'd hurt their case, but you'd think that basic information would be in the police report...

These autonomous cars can't predict everything that is going to happen on the road. If it senses something on the road ahead maybe I don't want it to apply the brakes to slow down. Maybe it needs to hit the gas and plow through that snowdrift.

If I ever see one tailing me I'll stop on a dime and collect the insurance.

I think I should invent a GPS spoofer and steal the cars by simply fooling them into driving to my house.

Set a GPS course to the nearest demolition derby. I'd watch!

All of these criticisms are valid but autonomous cars will eventually become commonplace. Not this decade, or even the next, but they will become a reality.

And maybe some of us old geezers, who will be half blind and deaf, will appreciate having one take us to the doctor and bring us home again.

Maybe.

I think they are incompatible with human drivers. If they are serious about autonomous vehicles, human drivers will have to be stopped, or given separate roadways.

Right now you are right. But in a few decades AI will be essentially as good as a human so an independent observer won't be able to tell the human from the machine, unless the machine has fewer errors.

Right, and then someone turns on their boat's radar set and the EMF interference sends you and your driverless car over the side of the bridge.

I installed an autopilot on my boat and it worked great unless a nearby boat turned on his radar. Usually when I was down below taking a wizz or making a sandwich. The autopilot would go WIIZZZZ! and the helm would go hard over damn near capsizing the boat and putting me on a collision course with something.

You have to ask yourself. If autonomous cars are such a reality, why don't we use autonomous lawn mowers?

Those mowers are Not really autonomous at all..

Those mowers use a pre-installed wire "track" to follow or contain it, unlike a roomba vacuum cleaner (That has no nasty blades).

"All mowers use a battery operated motor with cutting blades, an AC powered base station, perimeter wire, and sensors that prevent them from wandering off your property or into the street. With one end of the perimeter wire connected to a terminal on the base station, the wire is laid along the border of your lawn and held in place using stakes that are similar to those used to pitch a tent. The other end of the wire terminates back at the base station and is connected to the second terminal. The base not only charges the mower but provides the wire with an electrical charge. Sensors on the mower use the charged wire to guide it along the boundaries and to return to the base when the lawn is cut or when the battery needs to recharge."
