Default Jessi Combs Dead at 36

She was trying to break her own Speed Record.

"Yesterday, while attempting to beat her own land speed record, the 52,000 horsepower jet-powered car driven by racer, fabricator, and television personality Jessi Combs crashed in the Alvord Desert in Oregon, killing her, as local news reports. Combs was 36 years old and held the title of “fastest woman on four wheels” after breaking 398 mph in that same North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger in 2013.
Combs was attempting to beat her previous record, and had attempted it as recently as last year, when she managed a 483.227 mph shakedown run before mechanical problems ended the attempt

A recent interview..

I had spent time talking with her at several of the King of the Hammers events and she was always a down to earth person. She once even spent a half hour or so talking to just my grandson (he was 15 att) at one event.

Oh no. I'm sorry to hear this. I never met her, but I did meet Elaine, the Embry Riddle jet car driver. Certainly an interesting, and risky career choice....

I asked Elaine about the risks and she was rather candid about them. Much like a test pilot would be. Impressive.

That is really a shame. It was her life's dream to win a land speed record, not get killed.

We have a young nephew in a serious coma right now because he had a congenital brain defect that caused a unexpected bad bleed.

Parents don't want to outlive their kids. There are no words.

THERE are worse ways to go then dying when you are pursuing your passion.

I always thought I would go out in a blaze of gunfire saving the weak from the predators.

Now I am just getting older and looking for my body to slowly betray me on a downward spiral.

Good for you Jessi Combs. You were doing what you love and now will never grow old.

Not to be cold, but she knew the risks and I bet she wouldn't have wanted to go out any other way.

RIP to a person who lived life on her own terms and did everything she could to be the best.

I followed her, it is quite a shock to lose her. Lots of LSR racers had close brushes with death, Craig Breedlove came close to drowning in a crash at Bonneville. Gary Gabelich had a close call in a funny car, he was eventually killed on the street on his motorcycle in 1984. His car was The Blue Flame and ran a fastest speed of 650 MPH.

Every time I see a F-104 with wheels attached, I think that if I wanted to drive something extra fast, it'd probably be one of those. I'd just make sure that it had a functional ejection seat.
