An intelligent person can pick through the crap of mm (mainstream media) for truth but they will go uninformed of some key facts that help paint a picture of actual world directions. You will also give them the satifaction of directing your range of discourse and advertising revenue. Im weaning my self slowly of cnn.com for these reasons.
There are many alternative sources out there. BreaktheMatrix from the Ron Paul movement comes to mind, as does the bit too liberal adbusters. Noam Chomsky has written a great deal on how media controls democratic societies.

I noticed this hasnt had a post on this thread for sometime, but I figured I would add my two cents in anyway. I consider myself I guess a news junkie I try and pay attention to as much of the news as I can and take in as much as I can. I tend to start out with Foxnews and then go onto CNN. Those two mostly cover the gist of the main headlines with some differences in bias and such, but that isn't in my opinion always a bad thing. Then I pay close attention to the Wall Street Journal the economic headlines are a main issue these days and gives me a heads up if I or where I can look into investing. And just because what the main stream media says including on Wall Street does not seem to always be the case. In my rounds of checking the news I then goto my local websites. Being as I am from PA and in the Pittsburgh area I pay attention to the news that happens in Pittsburgh and the surrounding towns to include my hometown then I go look into the surrounding states. Such as Ohio, West Virginia, New York, and Maryland mostly I am looking at their weather and just looking to see what might be coming my way in few hours or in the next day. After I finish the local news sites then I start exploring the agricultural sites to include the hunting and fishing online magazines. Those sites and newspapers gives a good heads up on was the crop good or bad so if I see the farmers are reporting a not so good year then I know to expect in a month or two that most likely my grocery bill is most likely going to increase. Even though I am not a believer in Global Warming I have found that the "GREEN" sites also give a heads up on things to again agriculture, but also and mostly energy costs. After I have checked out the sites if I still have time I go look around the blogs. The news is reporting this and that, but to get a true feel of what people are thinking and in some cases to get the news as it comes in I check the blogs. People are very informative on blogs. Then if I still have time then I go on and look at sites like al jazeera and others like it. Being as I am a military guy it is sometimes informative to hear what my adversaries are saying and pushing out.

I read and watch the local news for the weather reports and human interest stories. Like this.

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/200...ssault-of-dog/

(Cocoabutter was originally having non-stop seizures from her brain injury and couldn't eat or drink, and the owners thought she'd have to be put down. Now with constant care she seems to be recovering a bit, and she MAY live...

And the temperature was only 60 degrees and the car wasn't overheating, this wasn't a rescue attempt gone wrong, it was a deliberate attack.)

I use the internet to bypass the mainstream media's editorial decisions as to what stories are important and which can be ignored, using various websites to be kept informed of what I want to learn about. I also listen to shortwave because other nations have a very different take on events than our government does...

I get my news from many different sources. IMO relying only upon one source risks being brainwashed by that source's point of view.

To be truely informed means that you must do your own research and retrieve information from multiple sources. The mass media will force feed you someone elses opinion without allowing you to form your own. I think that is what they want!

I hit them all and compare. each site is going to put "their" spin on it so you have to pull out the actual news.

I get 90% of my news from the internet. (the rest via word of mouth) Turning off the TV was honestly one of the best things I have ever done. It is very liberating.

Current TV is good even though it is headed by Al Gore it is one of the few places where the media isn't skewed left or right otherwise it depends on what I'm looking for. If it is business than Neil Cavuto on Fox or Bloomberg, if it is just straight news then I watch CNN wolf blitzer or John King, if I want news with a conservative spin I just watch Glenn Beck. So I get a pretty well rounded view on everything.
