... and there are those who think when SHTF they could just go to their bug-out farm and grow their own food....

Thieves steal 22,000 apples from Michigan orchard

https://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/t...chigan-orchard

The 180 bushels of apples stripped off 5 acres' worth of trees, are worth an estimated $14,400 and require an entire year to be grown. (Spicers Orchards)

Investigators aren't sure if the theft is related to the 400 pumpkins stolen from an orchard in St Clair County 's Grant Township or 50,000 apples stolen from an Indiana orchard last month.

But, but, but they just needed a few apples to survive.

Illegals may or may not be the "brains" behind the heist, but they are undoubtedly the workers.

Do farmers carry insurance that covers crop theft? I suspect that may not be covered by insurance.

How do you steal 5 acres of apples off of the trees unnoticed?

2 guys didn’t do this by hand overnight. This was a group with equipment.

And what would yo I do with that many fresh apples? You can’t eat them. So they will have to be sold.

This is a strange one

Genetic testing could locate the batch of stolen apples.

I’ll bet they end up in Florida.

Once they go through the chop shops and are converted into applesauce and fried pies, thereís no tracing them.

Gone in 12 hours. The new hit movie....

How about them apples?

We are lucky that more theft of anything of value does not occur. Lots of stuff out there with no or limited protection. Imagine how much money in lumber the average shipment of 2 x 6 on a flat bed truck carries. All the thieves would need is a tractor to haul the trailer and a place to sell it. At several dollars a board it would be quick money.

You're right about that. I remember years back a semi overturned on the median of an interstate. They couldn't clean it up that afternoon and since it was not blocking traffic so I gather they figured it wasn't important to do so quickly.

The flat bed trailer was carrying a lot of plywood, 2x4s and some bigger stuff. When I was going to work that night, I noticed at least four pick-ups with trailers pulled off next to it and a large group of guys were loading up wood as fast as possible. Once loaded, they took off.

I'd guess it was a crime of opportunity and a lot of the load was taken. I don't know what the cost of the material taken was as I don't know how much of a load a semi can really carry, but I'm sure it was a high cost.

It's doubtful that 22,000 apples were stolen from an orchard located next to the owners house, especially if it were in a long term SHTF where you would actually EXPECT it to happen. A back country homestead with a small family farm/livestock/orchard still seems like the best way to go (IMO) in a long term SHTF/WROL.

Good fences, good dogs would help & home made flash bang/warning devices with a blank reloaded shotgun shell could be strung up with the wire at chest level so your dogs don't trip them. In any long term SHTF/WROL, good people with good plans will still die but, not as much as mindless Consumers with ZERO plan.

See that all the time in so cal. They'll set up on the side of the road and sell it off. A little cheaper, but you're supporting theft if you buy it. They don't have many customers.

In Mexico, nobody would care.

If I were the thief, I'd 'launder' them into pies and sell them at every school bake sale up and down the East coast.

That kind of thing happens more than you 'd think.

Tonight I stopped by a friend's place and checked the game cam's I put up around his catfish ponds.

Previously some commercial fisherman who came up here to deer hunt stole his catfish while he was away at work. (Well over $20k worth.)

Pull up and steal cows, go into the back side of your land with a skidsteer and steal logs....

My plan (to answer the OP) is 2 fold:

1. Distance from paved roads.
2. Make it a community resource so the community will protect them.
(Also have the "obvious" and the "hidden" so if one is stripped.... My needs are small.)
