If there is a specific reference to go with that photo I don't know what it is.

But it is good advice. Don't wait until nightfall to start setting up your camp. Stop earlier than you think you need to and get dug in before it gets dark.

Went to the deer woods one year towing a popup. Found a nice spot, set up the camper and was making coffee when the wind shifted - dead cow (VERY DEAD - legs straight up and looked like a parade balloon), about 30 yards away.

Broke a record taking down the camper and learned to scout out the camp site way better from them on.

WW

shoot straight - stay safe

LOTS of state forest in my AO.
Back when I worked for the county there was an almost war taking place in the woods.
There was a group of hunters who had been using the same campsite for their tent deer camp for about 20 years. They were never a problem, always cleaned up after they were done and such.

SO

They arrive a few days before season ready to put up their 5 tents... and someone new was "in their spot."

4 guys in one tent, vs 12 guys with 5 tents and history at that location.

and

neither side wanted company.

Finally F&G talked the newcomers into leaving by using the "do you really want to bed down in a canvas tent with 12 pizzzed off heavily armed guys sulking about you in the spot they have used since almost before you were born ?"

Public land, no one could be forced to leave, but... choosing wisely seemed to be the option of the day. No one got beat or shot or anything bad.

Always scout your site if you can.
