Good idea in theory, but I don't know of any diseases discovered in glacial ice that could be a problem if released. Not even any "new" plant diseases.

Ninety-nine point nine percent likelihood that any life form that could live in a lake 1000 feet below the ice in Siberia or Antarctica could not survive on the surface under the scorching sun.

It is that last tenth of a percent that great Hollywood Horror Movies are made of.

Cutting the tropical forests are a more likely source for diseases...

There are a lot of things frozen in the permafrost and tundra.

https://news.nationalgeographic.com/...virus-science/

The giant viruses being found have been effectively extinct for about 30,000 years now, and are being released into the environment as the tundra and permafrost areas in the arctic thaw out. These giant viruses are far more genetically complex than modern viruses.

The one thing that we have going for us with these old viruses is that we as a species have already survived exposure to them at times in the past. Old viruses and bacteria are less of a problem for us than "newly evolved strains" from which we do not yet possess an immunity to.

I myself find it intriguing that these viruses pretty much went extinct 30,000 years ago except where they were safely ensconced in the frozen tundra and permafrost in the arctic. How do several viral types that are much tougher and more evolved viruses virtually go extinct, and the lesser weaker ones survive and live on into modern times? I have been reading up on this subject over the last few years, because I find it a rather fascinating and somewhat unexplainable discovery.

Sounds like fear mongering and global warming (climate change) scare tactics.

Regardless, the earth warms and cools. It will release what it releases, whether or not we help it along.

What happened to the almighty science that could fight such things?!

Laughable, all of it.

I would like to wager that these 30,000 year old viruses could be rather deadly to creatures such as the wooly mammoth.

Luckily they aren't around anymore to pick up these viruses.

Man is blamed for the Woolly Mammoth demise, but a deadly super virus that went extinct at the same time should like a better candidate.

Doesn't explain why so many woolly mammoths are found frozen with the fresh flowers and plants they had eaten still undigested in their stomachs. Something very serious, happened very quickly to accomplish that...

Default Pollution

I am amazed that so many people on this forum so easily dismiss a possible threat to society without a second thought. The same goes for climate change. Regardless of whether anyone believes in global warming or not, pollution is a FACT & it is a very real threat to our environment.
I don't believe everything that I read, but I do give it some thought. Yes this stuff is scary, but denial will not make it go away. There is too much evidence out there now to deny the weather patterns are changing. No real snow here now for at least 30 years. Temperatures have risen to the point where winter no longer kills off the bugs & we lost our whole berry patch. Our garden now need shade cloth to stop the brassicas literally burning in summer. This is in New England, you think this is normal?
If you can't be bothered to fight climate change, perhaps you could at least accept the fact that the earth is in serious trouble from pollution & contamination & do what you can to help.
Keith.

Oh, we are back to blaming Climate Change again. OH MY. Look man has very little to do with real Climate Change. When volcanos were erupting daily spewing more Monoxide into the air in few hours than man can in a hundred years.
