I shudder to think of the system shock that people here would go through if 70% of our country lost power for most of the day.

Just imagine the tantrums this would cause if it happened on a day that American Idol or Diving with the stars was on.

The shock to the sheeple would be something to see.

People would be standing around like frozen zombies as their minds crashed with the blue screen of death when they figured out they could not update their Facebook status. Just makes me shutter to think about it.

Interesting how the military was immediately deployed to "protect" the masses. Loss of the grid is our top threat too, IMHO. Not just being without power, but the ramifications of that on the food supply, security, economics and emergency services, to name a few. Having some hand crank lanterns and a solar panel or two isn't gonna cut it of the country is plunged into darkness, but I am also not prepared to be the only house on the block with a generator running either. Even less so in a metropolitan area like Caracas.

everytime I have a 2-3 day power outage, I get so much stuff done at my place. Cannot watch tv or surf the net. House gets much cleaner, get to read all those books I have on the shelf, work is closed but I still get paid. How is that a bad life?

BTW, I water/pressure can my foods, so the lost of a refrigerator doesn't affect me that much except for when I want a cold beer.

One big problem though is the inability to buy stuff without cash. Credit card machines and POS terminals will be DOA.

I remember when Ceasar Chavez was in power. I cut up my Citgo credit card and told Ceasar to put it where the sun doesn't shine. He stole all the Oil companies equipment and property.. I think 70% power off is way too much power for them.

I rather enjoy mass power failures. Points out your weak spots and it gets quiet for a change.

People are so spoiled. It wasn't all that long ago that no one had electricity but now people think they can't live without it. Sometimes I wish I was born 150 years ago.

You should have seen it in Cali back in The 90's . We lost power to more than 60% of the state when a fire burnt through the main power line in northern ca. It was out in our area for about a day and a half. There were people in the local super markets fighting over bottles of water a couple of hours into it. Pretty pathetic and revealing

We had a pretty big sub-station catch fire about 2 weeks ago just before I got off duty. My daughter was home alone, my wife called me pannicked about checking on her. Then the phones went dead. No kidding. I got home about 45 min later and asked my wife if it was ok, she told me when she got home my daughter had locked the doors and just lit some candles and was chilling out with her friend. I was impressed. All my ranting had sunk in. I went to the storage and dbl checked all our cooking supplies walked over to my neighbor and made sure we all had enough fuel and that we could hook the generator up to the well in the morning and then would rotate powering the fridges every couple of hours. We were just chilling out, in hundred degree weather. And quiet, we live in the country, you could have heard a frog fart a couple hundred yards away. It was great. You should have seen the rest of the town though, all lights were out, LEOs were trying to direct traffic at the 2 big intersections in our "huge" town, and people were flipping them off, screaming at them, and just completely ignoring there direction. That lasted 5 or 6 hours at the most. It's really pathetic how this is all going to come unraveled.
