Default Long-range audio amplifiers---a good prepper tool?

I've been thinking lately of getting one of these parabolic long-range audio amplifiers:

I think it would be a great addition to one's surveillance capabilities. Especially on a dark night, or to detect something that may be hidden out-of-sight.

The one in the picture is claimed to be able to detect sounds up to 300 feet away. And it costs about $50.

I was wondering what others have to say about the potential usefulness of these devices. And in what sorts of situations they could be used. If any others have them, and how effective they have been.

Thoughts? Opinions?

For people who have hearing problems its a good idea. In a city or town there will be background noise that may be an issue sorting out the sounds. In the Country where it is quieter it would be perfect.

IMO more usefull for surveillance operations. Unless you have someone actively sweeping the area or are monitoring a pathway or gate etc.. in concert with alarms etc..

it definately expands capacity, even in non radio based communications.

It would be down my list a lot on what to spend $50 on.

Just bear in mind eavesdropping laws, as it is a felony to listen/record to people where privacy of communication is assumed.

Check your local laws

https://definitions.uslegal.com/e/eavesdropping/

Quote:
The crime of eavesdropping means to overhear, record, amplify or transmit any part of the private communication of others without the consent of at least one of the persons engaged in the communication, except as otherwise provided by law.

If you're interested and are willing to pay for it, Telinga make a parabolic microphone dish that folds:

That would make hauling it around a lot easier.
