I've probably given more thought to this than I should.

But I have to go with the Ian Holm in Alien. Fire seems a universal danger to life on earth...so probably a decent bet towards all life.

Hence, my flamethrower:

Flamethrowers are disqualified from the discussion.

Because it's not "gun or flamethrower" but rather " gun AND flamethrower"

If and/or when ET gets here they will likely have much better weapons than we have.

Pray they don't find you.....

This.

If aliens are sufficiently advanced to get here at all, they will be sufficiently advanced to control or kill us from orbit, without anyone realizing what is going on.

Lacking any evidence whatsoever of their existence, I suggest focusing on more well-defined problems (flood, drought, famine, hurricane, earthquake, fires, etc).

Any true ET threat is either going to be vulnerable to AP or high volume of fire, or immune to any weapons we possess as civilians. Start with .308, .30-06, and similar calibers as starting points.

In most sci-fi books, ETs are either armored beyond our ability to harm, or genetically engineered killing machines in vast numbers. Insectile ETs invade by the 100 millions for example, in the form of 30 foot armored centipedes.

We can kill them with mass fire, but they soak up all our ammunition and overwhelm us with numbers.
