In a perfect world, that would be great, but unfortunatley that is not the case,we have to deal with the now. I hope you can find some peace and the solitude you want, ain't nothing wrong with your desire, hope you can find it.

It's more than just politics, too, it's a whole world view -- sometimes I want to just take someone aside and tell them they've escaped California, it's going to be okay now. We get calls all the time where I work from concerned citizens who've just seen someone carrying a firearm -- not brandishing, not threatening, not being crazy . . . just that they have one. Again, I get it that in southern Cali that's on par with seeing a unicorn, but c'mon . . .

Yes, one ounce or less on your person is legal.
It won't be legal to buy and sell for about another
12 months. The political types are still writing the
rules and regs. It's going to be an interesting year.

NJ here. My BF loves watching the different shows about Alaska and the Yukon. He's from Wisconsin and LOVES winter and snow. We are very much outdoorsy people and respect Mother Nature. I watch those shows he has on and just shake my head - "Building Alaska" to me is just going to cause more human - animal conflicts and it is the animals that lose, every single time. You don't have the kind of people you had even 20 years ago moving up there. People just care about themselves. I'm not from Alaska, but I agree that I would prefer folk from the lower 48 leave it the beautiful place it is.

I will never move to Alaska... I've been though, beautiful place. I'm sure I will "tour" it again someday I'll make sure to buy a get nAKed sticker. But I'm not a man so I guess you won't be looking at me.

45 years in Anchorage...have seen a lot of not-so-great changes in my hometown, not the least of which is seeing all those thousands of homes on the Hillside. I grew up there when you could count the house lights on the hill on one hand! I am looking forward to finally moving out to the Mat-Su, but out in the country. There are cows just down the road from the house to which I'm moving
Agreed, we DON'T care how they do it Outside - but many are bringing those ways up here and I don't like the liberal slant we're getting. One reason I still LOVE the snow and the cold is that it keeps down the bugs and other creepy crawlies. Just wish that would still work on the two-legged kind as well as it used to.

There are many Northern And Western States that feel the way AK does. Minnesota gets a rap for being cold, and it is. We tend to get a lot of immigration though because we are one of the most generous welfare states in the nation. Because we're also such a big state, everyone goes "Up North" on holiday weekends and summers, and the traffic jams on '94 and '10 are nightmares coming back Sunday afternoons and evenings.

People are wanna be-s - ok fine, go enjoy the lakes, woods, whatever it is you're after. But please, take your garbage with you. Pack it in, pack it out! Quit poaching fish and animals! The laws are there for a freakin' reason. Do you guys have this issue also? And dang folks buying a piece of land, dragging a crap junk trailer to it, deciding it's not worth maintaining and than abandoning it. There are tons of just junked vehicles and trailers scattered throughout the woods.

Jobs are NOT plentiful in the Northern part of the state! You have to be able to eke out a living. However, small town living can be very nice if you ignore the gossipers and keep to yourself.

Cold? Yep. Isolated? In some places, yep. Tourists? Gad, yep. I'd love to live in Alaska except I know that it'd be too far for me to travel to the mainland part of the USA if my daughter needed specialist surgery, as I'd want to live WAYY out up there and wouldn't be conducive to her care.

Hang in there!

You're not the only one.

I was born and raised on the Kenai Peninsula and watched it go downhill. Dipnetting with my family is one of my favorite memories - the Beluga whales swimming so close they bumped into us, etc. But seeing what it's become I would never go back and do it now. When they open the Kenai to dipnetting and everyone from Anchorage invades it's a three ring circus.

After 20 some years up there I moved to a more remote area of SE Alaska. Less people and more wilderness.

You and me both. Bears are easy.

I read lots of literature by outdoor writers, some of whom were hunting guides in Alaska years ago. A handful of them spoke of how they didn't even carry a rifle when guiding for black bears.

You can talk to a bear. Hell, they make a lot more sense than a lot of the people I talk to. They smell better than some of the people I have to deal with as well.

Ever tried to have a conversation with a snake? They just stick their tongue out at you. Rude.

I agree sir. As a life long Alaskan I have seen the slow decay of our states financial and moral being from people who come here to get away from the lower 48. And then want it to be exactly like what they left. Makes no sense.

I say the same thing about my state. Im finishing off my pipe welding classes around January/February of next year, and was entertaining the idea of moving to Alaska if someone is willing to take on an entry level pipe welder. I'm not trying to prove anything, I'm not an invasive liberal but I do wanna get out from where I am now. I have the same issue in my state, all these dang Californians moving here..

I have nothing to prove by moving to Alaska I just wanna get out.
