FWIW, I'm a pretty fit guy but at the end of a 20 mile run I'd have a hard time kicking anybody's ass! So I can either not truly push my limits or I can carry a force multiplier. I often choose the latter...but I don't carry on every run either.

Out on the dirt road I live on runners carry all kinds of "weapons" in all kinds of manner. If they don't now, they will. Too many feral animals.

I see everything from golf clubs, bats, seen a crowbar. Those who carry a gun while running use a fanny pack.
