Hello All,
I am a new member from Missouri! I am actually hoping to relocate in the near future, Lord willing. I moved to southern MO with my family about 15 years ago, and we've moved around since then for various reasons. We ended up in the town we are now to be closer to a college. Anyway, long story short, my entire immediate family (11 counting my brothers wife and children) wants to relocate. We moved a lot growing up, but I spent a good portion of my childhood in northern ID. We had a small hobby farm, big garden, and tried to live as self-sufficiently as possible. I miss that so much now. I really value that way of life and basically have been searching for a way to return to my roots so to speak.

The difficulty is, we have been overwhelmed by all the information at our fingertips via the internet! There are so many statistics that are competing in our minds. Some states that are rated "best homesteading states" or "best states to go offgrid" are also listed as states with the most opioid addictions or drug overdose deaths. Some states are freer with cheaper land and yet they rate disturbingly high on violent crimes committed annually. There are so many factors to consider. We have considered Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, northern Missouri, and some other states. We have nearly picked a state several times, like I said, all the statistics out there can be rather conflicting! We really need some direction. Are there any topics on this site that focus on homesteading in different states? It would be great to talk with real people about the pros and cons of living in different areas besides just reading statistics.

Any advice would be welcome!

Good luck. I like N. Id but its too wet north of Grangeville for me.

Lots of factors to consider. Price of land. Cost of rent in taxes every year. Water. Cost of power. Cost of all the other taxes like driver's license... Is there jobs near by, at least seasonal ones. Weather - flooding, tornadoes/hurricanes; earthquakes, forest fires, chemical or nuke plants.

I grew up from age 5 to 14 about 40 miles or so outside St. Louis on a mini homestead. Moved back to where I was born, Senath, Missouri, down in the Bootheel, when I was 14.

We did spend quite a bit of time in the areas west of Cape and in and around Poplar Bluff and over to Willow Springs.

Unless there are overriding reasons to leave Missouri, and you can find a place in the Ozarks that even comes close to being suitable, I do not think you will find any better location to set up a facility for you and your family for long term, off-grid, self-reliant, highly self-sufficient, living.

No place is ever perfect, and any place can wind up ground zero of some event that is not survivable, but he Ozark Plateau has so much to recommend it that it is hard to find other places that can match it over all.

However, you very well may have reasons of which I have no knowledge that dictates moving outside of that area of Missouri.

You might look around Dyersburg TN, up away from the Mississippi at least a ways to get above any possible flooding.

Possibly the area of Idaho between Priest River, ID and Newport, WA.

Not too fond of Colorado politics at the moment, but the area around South Fork is on my list of options, anyway.

Just a few opinions.

Welcome to the site.
