I was just over in the chat room with a great discussion with some of the members over there, and realized very quickly I hadn't read/even heard of a good number of the books that they were discussing. If we were to put together a top ten list of "survival/TEOTWAWKI/apocalypse type books" that would be of value to people of our persuasion, what would they be?

Mine deal with plant identification for medicinal or edible uses.

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West --Gregory Tilford
Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild and Not So Wild Places -- "Wild Man" Steve Brill

My fiction is the real life story of survival in the antarctic; Endurance by Caroline Alexander. It chronicles the kind of guts it takes to survive in a situation, and is a very powerful read.

Feel free to weigh in, please, let's put two lists together, one for non-fiction, and one for fiction for folks of the preparedness persuasion.

The List (So Far!)

that is a GREAT idea we do need a sticky of a must read list of books/videos under 1 post that only 1 or 2 ppl can add to the list (and break into catagories as it gets bigger) as we suggest to be read. it is important to have a good library. really good idea

Thank you guys for your responses!

KEEP 'EM COMING!!

I think what we'll do is put together the list currently into fiction and non-fiction, if we start getting a lot of books suggested on the lists, we can break it into categories. But for now, we'll focus on getting the list of fiction and non-fictions, then maybe vote on ordering them into a top 10 sort of thing. Most important to read, next most important, etc..

Great suggestions! What about Fiction books, any that you can think of that would be intriguing reads from a Survival standpoint?

I've been compiling a list of recommended books by everybody i come across for any particular survival/prep thread at any survival/prep forum. I don't frequent many others, as i prefer people here. Here is a cutting of it so far in no particular order. Excel to text is pretty weak.

The Encyclopedia of Country Living -Carla Emery
Backwoods Home Magazine Anthologies
Handyman In-Your-Pocket -Richard Allen Young
The Humanure Handbook -Joseph C. Jenkins
Nourishing Traditions -Sally Fallon
30 Energy-Efficient Houses You Can Build -Alex Wade
Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual -Reader's Digest
Fix-It-Yourself Manual -Reader's Digest
North american wildlife -Reader's Digest
ABCs of the Human Body -Reader's Digest
Five Acres and Independence -M.G. Kains
Practical Electrical Wiring -Richter & Schwan
Housebuilding, A Do-It-Yourself Guide -Popular Science
Complete Building Construction -Audel
The Complete Guide to Contracting Your Home -McGuerty & Lester
Do-It-Yourself Plumbing Max -Alth
Home Plumbing Projects & Repairs -Black & Decker Home Improvement Library
Modern Hydronic Heating -John Siegenthaler
Family Medical Guide -The American Medical Association
Complete Home Medical Guide -The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
The Complete Book Of Self Sufficiency -John Seymour
Joy of Cooking -Irma S. Rombauer
New Complete Self-sufficiency -John Seymour
Stocking Up -Carol Stoner
Bespoke Shoemaking -Tim Skyrme
Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants -Bradford Angier
So Easy To Preserve -University of Georgia Cooperative Extension
Household Cyclopedia
SAS Survival Manual
SAS Combat Survival Guide
How To Stay Alive In The Woods
Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants -"Wild Man" Steve Brill
Edible and Medicinal Plants of the West -Gregory Tilford
When Technology Fails -Matthew Stein
98.6 -- The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive -Cody Lundlin
The Foxfire Series
The Wildfire Series
Army Field Guide Manuals

A Wiki is really the proper place for such a list, but everyone's opinions of forum vs. wiki diverge. I personally HATE having to read a 9 page thread to glean a dozen or so listings for a list like this. But, i'll do it anyway as i am able to do so...

As for fiction, Gary Paulson's "Hatchet" series is geared towards younger readers, but is entertaining nonetheless. How about some Jack London, Hemingway, or Robinson Crusoe by Daniel DeFoe?

The idea behind this BakCompat is so that you won't have to go through the whole thread. I'm taking the books given to me and editing them into my first thread at the beginning on the first post. So anything put into the thread goes onto the first post.

Thanks folks for all your stuff. Keep em coming. Also, with the anthropology books, and the Hemingway and Jack London, which books specifically?

Thanks,
Bulk
