Default Northern WV Hunting and Shooting Areas

Advertise Here

I have just escaped the liberal hell of MD and am a still-unpacking new resident of WV in what the state considers District 2 (Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson county area). Looks like nearby public lands for hunting are limited to Shannondale (1361 acres) or Sleepy Creek (23k acres).

Anyone have any experience with either during small game or deer firearms seasons? Anyplace to hunt upland game like rabbits?

There are really no public shooting ranges except a shotgun only (no slugs) range, so I guess I am also looking for advice as to local private ranges worth joining for handgun and rifle shooting up to say 200-300 yards.

I may also consider leasing some land if I could hunt and target shoot on it with a few family members, but I have no idea about costs or availability. As I say I am very new to the area.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks, I am already enjoying the ability to buy a handgun without being treated like a criminal.

I just realized you said hunting, not just shooting. Sorry about that!
Although hanging out at the local ranges you will meet local hunters who could help. In time you'll befriend some of our farmers, no doubt. havent hunted in years myself. And I've managed to let my range memberships expire. Gotta fix that!

I hate to break this to you, but deer chronic wasting disease in the eastern third of wv is epidemic. Look it up, prions are nothing to mess around with. No cure or treatment. Other game is ok.
